Basketball: Marist fires men’s coach Mike Maker

It’s time to start over once again at Marist.
Men’s basketball coach Mike Maker was fired on Monday after four disappointing seasons when the team failed to win more than eight games.
“I have the utmost respect for Mike in the way he led our men’s basketball program,” Marist Director of Athletics Tim Murray said in a release issued by the school. “From the day he stepped on campus, Mike guided our program with class and integrity. The program accurately represented our expectations in the classroom and community, but ultimately we had to make a decision that was in the long-term best interest of the team.”
Maker took over in the spring of 2014 once Jeff Bower finished his lone season at 12-19 and returned to the NBA as general manager of the Detroit Pistons.
Maker was a celebrated NCAA Division III coach but he failed to find success with his recruiting and up-tempo style of play. The Red Foxes posted records of 7-25, 7-23, 8-24 and 6-25 in his four seasons.
A national search will begin for Maker’s replacement.
Marist has failed to even reach a championship game in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference since joining in 1997-98.
The only two NCAA tournament appearances came in 1986 under coach Matt Furjanic and in 1987 under coach Dave Magarity.
Since Magarity’s firing in spring 2004, Marist has used four coaches. Matt Brady posted marks of 11-17, 19-10, 25-9 and 18-14 before departing to take the head coaching job at James Madison – that led to a lawsuit Marist waged against Brady and JMU, which was eventually settled.
Marist turned to Chuck Martin but his five seasons were recognized for futility, with records of 10-23, 1-29, 6-27, 14-18 and 10-21.
