Pine Bush hoops star Brandon Powell gives verbal commitment to Division I FDU

Brandon Powell, Pine Bush’s all-time leading scorer, committed to Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University Friday.

Powell, a two-time Varsity 845 first-team guard, impressed FDU coach Greg Herenda and his staff at a workout earlier this week and was offered a full scholarship to the Northeast Conference school shortly after.

The 6-foot-2 Pine Bush senior finished his career with 1,357 points and 163 3-pointers. Powell helped the Bushmen to back-to-back Section 9 Class AA title his junior and senior seasons. Pine Bush had not won a section title since 2000. Powell averaged 20.0 points per game his senior season.

“This is what every high school basketball player strives for deep down inside,” Pine Bush coach Steve Distefano said. “He worked for this and it’s a great opportunity for him.”

FDU coaches first watched Powell play against Mount Vernon in the 2017 state opening round. A member of Herenda’s staff watched Powell play a few times after the high school.

Powell, 17, will join another Section 9 standout at FDU. Saugerties graduate Darnell Edge, who led Division I in free-throw percentage (94.4) in the 2017-18 season, returns for his senior year.
