Tennis: Washingtonville stops Cornwall’s streak

Washingtonville first-year varsity players Jack Godfrey and Owen Strommer helped end Cornwall’s record 91-match winning streak Monday.

Godfrey and Strommer, both freshman, posted a straight-set win at third doubles to give Washingtonville a 4-3 victory and hand Cornwall its first regular-season loss since April 26, 2012. Washingtonville bounced back from a 5-2 defeat to Cornwall on April 10.

Washingtonville first-year coach Matt Anastasi was a key member of the Cornwall teams that started and continued the streak. Anastasi won the Section 9 doubles title in 2012 and 2013

“It’s a weird feeling having been on that side, playing in the streak, playing for coach (Steve) Ring and knowing all those kids personally,” Anastasi said. “But I can’t be more proud of how resilient and positive my guys were today across the board. They played with belief and energy from Gabe (Castillo-Sanchez) down to Owen and Jack at third doubles.

“I have tremendous respect for Cornwall as a first-year coach. I would like to emulate that program.”

Cornwall’s run included six straight undefeated seasons from 2013-2018.

Castillo-Sanchez, the defending Section 9 and OCIAA singles champion, seventh-grader Lucas Castillo-Sanchez and Andy Godfrey won at first, second and fourth singles respectively.

Singles: Gabe Castillo-Sanchez (W) d. Dan Leach 6-0, 6-2; Lucas Castillo-Sanchez (W) d. Gurv Suri 6-1, 6-4; Reilly Chin (CORN) d. Nick Delbue 6-2, 6-0; Andy Godfrey (W) d. Will Webber 6-2, 7-5.
