Section 9 golf: New Paltz’s Puleo first-round leader

New Paltz junior Nick Puleo shot a 9-over 79 and leads the Section 9 tournament by one stroke after the first round at The Powelton Club in Newburgh.

Puleo, the Mid-Hudson Athletic League champion, will tee off in the second and final round at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Casperkill Country Club.

Millbrook’s Tyler Schaad carded a 10-over 80 for second place. Kingston junior Donte Groppuso, the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association champion, and James I. O’Neill senior Andrew Bagley are tied for third at 13-over 83.

Section 9 chairman Tom Howe said Powelton was a strong test Tuesday.

“The wind was a factor,” Howe said. “The rough was thick. You had to keep the ball in the fairway. The greens were firm but fast.”

The top nine golfers at Casperkill advance to the state championships on June 3-4 at Cornell University.
