Girls Lacrosse: Three-peats for Warwick and Goshen

The rallying cry has become a constant for the Warwick girls lacrosse team over the last weeks.

Whether it’s during practice, pregame or following another win, coach Denis O’Connor, a big Game of Thrones fan, borrows a line from Arya Stark’s scene with Melisandre in the epic series Season 8, Episode 3’s “The Long Night.”

What do the Wildcats say the next opponent? “Not today.”

Warwick is once again heading to the state tournament after capturing its third straight Section 9 Class B title with a 13-4 win over Valley Central, scoring nine of the last 10 goals of the game.

Senior Erin Flannery said she and classmate Taina Gamory were “babies” on Warwick’s first section championship team.

“We made school history three years ago, getting the first section title ever at Warwick and we wanted to keep that momentum going and set an example for the younger girls,” said Gamory, who will play for Division I Hartford.

Gamory is among Game of Thrones fans that think the eighth season should be redone.

“It (the ending) was so predictable,” Gamory said. “There could have been so much more to it. There’s a bunch of endings that I saw on Twitter and people writing their own endings and they were so much much better than the ending they chose.

“Bram the Broken, I didn’t know what that was. I did not like it. I was like, ‘Where did that come from?’ I wanted (the ruler of the Six Kingdoms) to be Jon (Snow). Jon went back to the Night’s Watch but the Night Walkers aren’t there anymore. What are they protecting?”

Goshen appeared in control of its third straight Section 9 Class C title, building a 6-3 halftime. Senior Maggie Calzaretta was locked in, scoring four of her game-high six goals in the first half.

But, Red Hook and Bailey Jordan roared to tie the game at 7-7. The game was knotted twice more before Goshen’s Kendra Godson drew a penalty with nine seconds left.

Godson had practice the free-position opportunity for hours upon hours in her backyard. The senior wouldn’t be denied as her goal lifted Goshen to a 10-9 victory.
