Section 9 tennis: Castillo-Sanchez brothers make history, Suri-Webber win another title

Lucas Castillo-Sanchez was fighting for every point in the Section 9 semifinals and his older brother, Gabe, was pacing back and forth in the seating area above the Match Point Tennis courts.

Lucas, a seventh-grader, clinched a state-tournament berth with three-set, 2.5-hour marathon win over Newburgh Free Academy’s Troy Steiner and set up a historic Section 9 final of brother vs. brother.

A few months ago, the Castillo-Sanchez brothers were volleying at Match Point Tennis, preparing for the season. Now, they were taking center stage.

Age prevailed over youth as Gabe captured his second straight Section 9 title.

Cornwall eighth-grader Gurv Suri was leaning toward playing singles in the postseason earlier this spring. When Will Webber starting playing fourth singles in Cornwall’s lineup, a position not eligible for the postseason, this season, Suri entertained the idea of joining forces with the senior as a wild-card doubles team. Suri decided to team with Webber, an experienced doubles player and the Cornwall duo has yet to lose a match, adding a Section 9 title to its Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association.
