Cassel leads Section 9 all-state boys lacrosse picks

Goshen’s Jared Cassel, Section 9’s all-time leading scorer, added another honor to his decorated high school career Monday.

Cassel, who finished with 238 career goals, was named fifth-team, all-state among small-school (Class C & D) players by the New York Sportswriters. Next stop for Cassel is Division III SUNY Cortland.

Warwick senior midfielder Chris Malota, who will be Cassel’s teammate at Cortland, was selected seventh-team, all-state among large-school (Class A & B players. Malota had 41 goals and eight assists in helping Warwick to the Section 9 Class B title.

Monroe-Woodbury senior defender Tyler Toledo was a third-team pick and Marlboro senior midfielder Jack Young, who will play for Division I Siena, was an eighth-team selection respectively in the large-school classes. Red Hook junior attack Brian Kelly made the sixth team in the small-school classes.

Receiving honorable-mention state recognition were Warwick senior goalie Sam Steng and Warwick junior attack Kenton Mears in the large schools and James I. O’Neill senior attack Mitch Browne and senior midfielder Luke Kilner in the small schools.
