ALL-STATE FOOTBALL: Woods Class A player of the year

Cornwall running back Amin Woods is the state Class A player of the year for the second straight season.

Woods, who was named Class A’s top player by the New York High School Football Coaches Association earlier this week, shared the New York State Sportswriters Association award with Plainedge quarterback Dan Villari.

The senior rushed for 1,839 yards and 24 touchdowns to help Cornwall to its second consecutive state Class A title. Woods had 225 yards and three touchdowns in Cornwall;s 30-27 victory over Carthage in the state final.

Seven of Woods’ Cornwall teammates received all-state recognition by the NYSSA: senior quarterback Louie Francese (second team); senior wide receiver Mike Alfieri (third team), junior kicker Mike Baloga (fourth team); senior linebacker Jay Channel (fifth team), senior defensive lineman Jack Robinson (sixth team); junior tackle Adrian Hakaj (honorable mention) and senior defensive end Jon Velez (honorable mention).

Goshen senior quarterback Matt Giordano and Minisink Valley senior receiver John Mack were selected to the Class A fifth team. Minisink Valley junior center Adam Fenner made the sixth team.

Newburgh Free Academy junior linebacker Tyler Rafferty and Monroe-Woodbury junior kicker Eddie Fennessy were the section’s top Class AA picks, making the third team.

Newburgh senior center Riley Higgins, Middletown senior defensive end Armel Duke and Pine Bush senior cornerback Kenny Holland were fourth-team picks. Pine Bush junior fullback Gunnar Meland and Middletown junior kicker Jason Sandoval were selected to the fifth team. Middletown senior running back Robert Denson was an honorable-mention pick.
