Valley Central pulls off another close win against rival Kingston

Another Valley Central-Kingston showdown, another classic. In a battle of Section 9’s best two teams, Valley Central edged Kingston 1-0 at Pat Burke Field in Lake Katrine on Thursday. The Vikings edged Kingston 3-1 on April 18. Expect Round III in this rivalry to come in the Section 9 Class AA championship. Valley Central (12-0), [...]

Valley Central set for challenging week

Valley Central catcher Jules Holbert and Kingston pitcher Ashley Cruise were teammates on Sunday at a travel tournament in Walden. Of course, that didn’t keep them from playfully talking some trash to each other about the big game on Thursday. Valley Central and Kingston – the two best teams in Section 9 – meet in [...]

Middletown’s M&M’s – Martinez and Marcano – helping Middies to impressive start

Looking for a breakout team this spring? There are several candidates this season, but tops on my list is Middletown. Coach Denise McKeown’s Middies are 5-3. Middletown won three games last season. Leading the way for Middletown is a pair of young guns if you will. Freshman Allison Marcano and Jazmyn Martinez, only an eighth-grader, [...]

Day of no-no’s in Section 9

In Section 9 on Wednesday, it was the day of the no-hitter. Three prominent pitchers threw no-no’s – Valley Central’s Cindy Connoly, Ashley Cruise of Kingston and Chester’s Marcella Brosnan. Video: VC catcher Alex Hraniotis, unplugged

I hit Valley Central softball practice on Thursday for some interviews leading into the Vikings’ Class AA state tournament semifinal against Cicero North Syracuse in Queensbury at 10 a.m. Saturday. One of the players I talked to is catcher, Alex Hraniotis, who will play at Marist next year. As you can see, Hraniotis, scrappy behind [...]

Post-game Valley Central video interviews after big John Jay win

Everyone knows about Valley Central’s big boppers in the lineup – Maggie Cocks, Leanna Feerick and Taylor Concklin – are among some of the Vikings’ dangerous hitters. But don’t forget about another up-and-coming Valley Central sophomore: outfielder Becky Kienz. Kienz was the hero in the Vikings’ 2-1 upset over undefeated John Jay-East Fishkill in the [...]
