Kingston-Mount Vernon preview

Here is a prview of the Kingston-Mount Vernon game. If you can’t make it to the game, I will have a live play-by-play blog on Varsity845.

State Class AA girls’ basketball state quarterfinals
Kingston vs. Mount Vernon
When : 1 p.m. Saturday
Where: Christl Arena, West Point
Team records: Kingston 19-1; Mount Vernon 20-3
State rankings: No. 3 Mount Vernon; No. 8 Kingston
How they got here: Kingston had a bye after winning the Section 9 Class AA title over Minisink Valley; Mount Vernon defeated Binghamton 67-55 in the regional semifinals.
Last year’s matchup: Kingston defeated Mount Vernon 58-55 in the state quarters behind 16 points and 12 rebounds by senior forward Charlise Castro. Kingston escaped with the win after Mount Vernon missed three 3-pointers with 10 seconds left that could’ve tied the game.
Kingston players to watch: Syracuse-bound guard Rachel Coffey (20 points per game, six assists and six rebounds a game, and has made 72 3-pointers this season); Castro (15 ppg, 10 rebounds); defensive stopper Ariana Parker (6 ppg, five rebounds); senior guard Kelly Kell (7 ppg, four assists) and junior center Sarah Longto (5 ppg, six rebounds, three blocks).
Mount Vernon players to watch: West Virginia-bound shooting guard Taylor Palmer (15 ppg); guard Sade King (five assists per game); 6-foot-4 freshman center Lubirdia Gordon (8 ppg, seven rebounds, 2.5 blocks per game); Shanyce Stewart (9.7 ppg); Carece Moore (10.5 ppg); Tatiana Lewin (10 points, seven rebounds a game).
Kingston scouting report: Coffey is one of the best players in the state and has the complete package. She can shoot, handle, and dish. Castro is relentless on the boards and can score in bunches. Parker is the team’s best defender because she can guard any position on the floor. Kell can shoot the 3 and drive. The 6-foot-2 Longto is the defensive presence in the middle with rebounds and blocks. Kingston has played great team defense in the postseason. “I have more confidence in this team than I’ve ever had,” Coffey said. “I’m excited about this game.”
Mount Vernon scouting report: Mount Vernon is very similar to Kingston in that they have a great guard in Palmer, and they can play any style.  They can run or slow it down. Palmer has a quick  release and is a good 3-point shooter. Gordon is a presence inside with her defense. King likes to dish.
Kingston keys: Parker has the challenge of containing Palmer, and Kingston needs to play great team defense by pressuring the ball. Longto will be key on Gordon inside. Offensively,  Coffey needs to hit her 3s and set up her teammates.  Castro has to score and rebound. Kell needs to be fearless going to the basket.  And if Longto has those open mid-range jumpers, she needs to take them.
Mount Vernon keys: Mount Vernon needs to contain Coffey and Castro, who did the most damage against Mount Vernon last year. Palmer is going to have to score and set up her teammates. “You can’t stop Rachel, she can only stop herself,” said Mount Vernon coach Patrice Wallace-Moore.
Kingston coach Steve Garner’s take: “I think it’s a good matchup. Palmer is a great player.  I think we’re a little better than last year’s team in the sense that Parker has a bigger role this year, and Longto is improving. We have better team quickness this year, and can get after it defensively.”
Mount Vernon coach Patrice Wallace-Moore’s take: “We really mirror each other. But Kingston has the maturity because they start four seniors and a junior. I respect Kingston because they have a great team. It’s not just Rachel that can beat you.”
Next up for the winner: A trip to the state semifinals vs. the Baldwin (Section 8)-Sachem East (Section 11) winner at 6: 15 p.m. Friday, March 19 at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
Prediction: Kingston

Kingston has rematch with Mount Vernon

Kingston will play Section 1 champion Mt. Vernon 1 p.m. Saturday at West Point in the state quarterfinals.

Kingston defeated Mt. Vernon, 58-55, last year in the state quarters. Kingston trailed that game by six with about five minutes to play before Rachel Coffey and Charlise Castro took over down the stretch. Castro scored six straight points and Coffey connected on an up-and-under as Kingston reclaimed the lead late in the game.

But Mt. Vernon had three chances to tie the game with 10 seconds left, but missed three straight 3-pointers.

Both Kingston and Mt. Vernon have most of their key players back, so it sets up for a great rematch.

I’ll have a full preview later in the week.

Kingston routs Minisink

This is the Kingston team I’ve been waiting to see this season. The scary thing is they probably could’ve played better offensively, but the defense did all the dirty work in the 53-34 win over Minisink in the Class AA championship game.

Rachel Coffey was sensational and Ariana Parker’s defense on Melissa Rivera was exceptional. And Kingston definitely turned it on for this game and never shut it off.  Minisink’s Stefanie Dolson was in foul trouble the whole game, but that was because Kingston went at her and forced her to play defense.

Here is the full Kingston-Minisink game story:

NEW PALTZ- Kelly Kell couldn’t sleep from the anxiety. It only got worse as the Kingston bus rolled in to the New Paltz campus.
Then Kell, a Kingston senior guard, said to herself, “This is it. Here we are.”
Kell’s teammate, Ariana Parker, was so nervous she had a puddle of sweat in her palms before tip-off.
Rachel Coffey doesn’t get nervous, but the Kingston phenom admitted even she was anxious coming into her sixth straight Section 9 Class AA championship game against rival Minisink Valley Monday night.
The nerves were the anticipation of what’s happened the past five years of the great Minisnk-Kingston rivalry. It’s been year after year of excruciating heartbreak and exquisite drama.
So the final showdown between Coffey and Minisink’s Stefanie Dolson, the two greatest girls’ basketball players in Section 9 history, had all the makings of another nail biter.
Not this year.
Top-seeded Kingston put on a defensive clinic and defeated second-seeded Minisink 53-34 to win its fourth consecutive Class AA championship at SUNY New Paltz. Kingston (19-1) has won five of the last six Class AA titles and is headed to its fourth straight state tournament.
“This is the best defensive game we’ve played in the run of championships,” Kingston coach Steve Garner said. “I liked the whole team’s defensive intensity. It was total team hustle. This was a sweet victory.”
Parker, who is one of the best defenders in the section, set the tone for the game by shutting down Minisink Valley’s best ballhandler, Melissa Rivera. Coffey wouldn’t let Audrey Pooley loose for open 3-pointers and Kingston center Sarah Longto was aggressive on Dolson inside.
“She’s so fast and she moves her feet so quick,” said Rivera, who was held to two points.  “She kept moving me side to side. They figured out every aspect of our game. It was tough but you have to give them credit. They played a great game.”
The aggression was fueled by Kingston’s 57-50 regular-season loss to Minisink back in January at Kate Walton Field House. The Tigers let the Warriors play their game. Pooley hit her 3s and Dolson got her inside game rolling.
So the Kingston players gathered at Kell’s house the night before the game and watched the game tape over a spaghetti dinner. They didn’t like what they saw. They didn’t like shooting 27-for-77 in that game, and they especially didn’t like losing.
“I think that loss sparked us,” Parker said. “It was a wake-up call. It’s always good to get the assignment to guard the best ballhandler.  So the adrenaline kept me going. This feels really good.”
It was a one-point game in the first quarter when Dolson picked up her second foul, and Kingston reeled off a 15-6 run capped by Coffey’s steal and breakaway layup that put Kingston up 23-15 with 3:47 left in the first half. Minisink Valley coach Judy Mottola gambled and put Dolson back in after the run. Dolson then scored three quick points, but Kingston took a 25-18 halftime lead.
Dolson picked up her third foul a minute into the third quarter. Then the Coffey highlight reel began. The sensational Kingston guard had the crowd in a frenzy with a couple of sweet assists. Coffey had a crossover pass to parker for a layup, and then she came back with a behind-the-back fake and found Kell for the easy bucket. Coffey had three straight assists and Kingston blew open the game to take a 39-22 lead with 2:05 left in the third quarter. Coffey than hit a 3-pointer from the corner that bounced off the front of the rim and fell in as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter.
“I had to get something going,” said Coffey, who has won five section championships and is Kingston’s all-time leading scorer.  “I’m not just a regular player.”
Coffey finished with 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Parker had 12 points and Kell finished with nine. Kingston senior forward Charlise Castro had 10.
“This one is so awesome because it was our last year together,” Kell said. “We were pumped for this game.”
“Four in a row feels good,” Castro added.
Dolson isn’t a regular player, either. But the Minisink 6-foot-5 center has been unable to get over the Kingston hump in the postseason. Dolson, who is 1 for 5 in section championship games against Kingston, walked off the court for the last time in her high school career with 54 seconds left. She grabbed her windbreaker in frustration, sat on the bench and buried her face in the jacket. The tears poured out like the did last year when Dolson missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 1.1 seconds left that could’ve given Minisink the title.
Dolson finished with a game-high 21 points and Pooley, who was the hero in the regular-season win over Kingston, was held to just three points. Rachel Skinner had four points for Minisink (17-3).
“Kingston-Minisink will always be a great rivalry,” Garner said.

Cornwall, Highland post impressive wins

I just wanted to share my thoughts on Sunday’s section games:

Cornwall-Wallkill:I have been waiting a couple of years to see this matchup, but it didn’t live up to the expectations.
I knew Cornwall was good, and they’ve always been one of the best defensive teams in the section.
But Cornwall’s performance against Wallkill Sunday was very, very impressive.
That fullcourt press was unbelievable. It was relentless and Wallkill just couldn’t handle it. Wallkill had more turnovers (34) than points (22). That’s unheard of for a team with Wallkil’s talent.
What impressed me most is the fact that Cornwall coach Chris Miller lost his top defenders from last year, and had a group of new players who had limited or no varsity experience.
And he was able to transform them into a section champion.
Of course it helps to have point guard Kelsey McDonald, who is the best player in Class A. McDonald does everything on the basketball court. She is one of the best ballhandlers in the section. She plays great defense. She drives, and just her presence on the court is irreplaceable.
McDonald had to step up her game this year because Cornwall lost a lot of its top players, and she has risen to the occasion.

“She is a basketball palyer,” Miller said.

As satisfying as this was for Cornwall, it had to be a major disappointment for Wallkill. Wallkill finally broke through and got to the section final, but had no answer for Cornwall’s press.

Highland-Burke: So I thought this game would be close, too. I was wrong about that, too.
I think Highland’s size and athleticism was too much for Burke in the second half. No way did I think Burke would give up 38 points in the second half. Burke probably didn’t think it would give up that much, either. But they gave Highland the outside shot, and the Huskies knocked them down.
Burke’s Stephanie Naru is a really good shooter, and scored 18 points to keep Burke in it. But Burke really needed Amanda Lynch to get hot from 3-point range, but Highland keyed in on her.

Burke-Highland has turned into a nice friendly rivalry. The teams have met five times in the Class B tournament, but it was their first meeting  in the section championship. Highland beat Burke in the semis last year.

Leonard draws DII attention

John A. Coleman Catholic point guard Taylor Leonard is being recruited by Division II Southern New Hampshire University.

The Southern New Hampshire coach was at Mount Saint Mary College Friday night watching Coleman win its third straight Class D championship. Coleman will be looking to repeat as state Class D champs and will play in the state semifnal on Saturday, March 20. The opponent is TBA.

Leonard, who came back from an ACL injury she suffered in September at a college showcase, said she went on the visit and really liked it.

Leonard said she’s playing at about 85 percent and is still hesitant driving to the basket and being aggressive on defense. Leonard came back in just four months and helped Coleman win its first MHAL championship last month.

Nice win by Wallkill…plays Cornwall for the title

I just got back from the Wallkill-Red Hook game. Wallkill defeated Red Hook 56-38 behind the play of Shelby Brochetti and Sara Bender. Wallkill will play Cornwall for the title 11 a.m. Sunday at SUNY New Paltz. I’ve been looking forward to that matchup for the past two years. Wallkill has been waiting for this matchup, too. I think it’s going to be a great game.

I think Wallkill played a really good game considering all the pressure it had to finally advance to the Class A championship. Red Hook couldn’t keep Brochetti from driving to the basket and Bender was more aggressive tonight looking for her shots. Brochetti had 17 points and Bender had 15.

Wallkill led 20-18 at halftime. Brochetti scored nine of Wallkill’s 23 points in the third quarter. Red Hook managed just five points in the fourth quarter and was 4-for-18 from the free throw line for the game. Ouch!!

Wallkill played good defense on Red Hook forward Sabrina Eggink. Wallkill had a body on her whether it was in the zone or man-to-man. Eggink did have 14 points, but tired in the fourth quarter.

I was very impressed with Red Hook sophomore guard Makenzie Burud. She’s going to be very good the next couple of years and Eggink is only junior. So Red Hook is set up pretty well for next year.

Pre-game thoughts on Red Hook-Wallkill

There are a couple of big games on the schedule tonight. Warwick is playing Minisink in the Class AA semi and Red Hook travels to Wallkill for a Class A semifinal. Cornwall is hosting Goshen in the other Class A semi and Monroe is playing Kingston in the other Class AA semi.

I chose to go cover the Red Hook-Wallkill game because I haven’t seen Red Hook play much this year, and I think it’s an interesting matchup with Sabrina Eggink and Sara Bender inside. Although I think Wallkill’s Kaitlyn Ponesse will defend Eggink to free up Bender inside. Red Hook guard Makenzie Burud is the real deal.

Red Hook caught Wallkill looking ahead last year when it upset the Panthers. I think this is a big game for Wallkill after coming off the loss to Coleman in the MHAL championship. And the Panthers haven’t had a run in the postseason the past couple of seasons. I want to see how Wallkill responds in this game.

I wish Bender was more aggressive inside. She has the ability to take over a game, but doesn’t really look to. And I think Wallkill needs her to be if they want to win this game and, eventually, the championship. Wallkill guard Shelby Brochetti is very aggressive going to the basket and creating her own shots. I like watching her play because she’s all over the court.

I’m looking forward to a great game. I’ll be back later with a full recap.

Highland-Ellenville afterthoughts

I was hoping for a close game, and I got one. The last five minutes of the game were really exciting after Ellenville fought all the way back to take the lead. Ellenville guard Zoraida Castillo had two wide-open 3-pointers in the final eight seconds, but they both rimmed out as Highland held on for a 44-41 win and advanced to the championship game against Burke on Sunday.

But, honestly, Highland out-played Ellenville for most of the game. For some reason, Ellenville guard Alyssa Ellis and Castillo didn’t start attacking the basket until the second half. Especially Ellis, she didn’t push the ball. She didn’t force the tempo or drive to the basket and didn’t really look to shoot. I was actually shocked she was so passive. Ellenville coach Mike Guiney agreed. He didn’t know why Ellis didn’t just play her game. I think Ellenville missed senior guard Victoria Mann, who has been out for the last five weeks with a broken arm.

Highland did a great job on Ellenville’s frontcourt of Darien Wilson and Regina Steele, holding them to a combined 12 points. When Highland center Monasia Bolduc fouled out with 3:11 to play, I thought Wilson and Steele would assert themselves. And they did. They got to the free throw line a few times down the stretch, but missed them. That was huge.

Bolduc led Highland with 15 points and and Jessica Dutka had 13. Castillo had 13 for Ellenville and Ellis only had nine points.

Anyway, it’s been a great run for Highland after starting the season at 2-4 and coming back to earn the No. 1 seed in a tough Class B. Ellenville also had a great season.
