Holbrook quits tennis

The Section 9 girls’ tennis scene has completely changed for the upcoming season.

Defending Section 9 singles champion Morgan Holbrook said Tuesday she will not play tennis this season.

“I lost the love for the sport,” said Holbrook, who was undefeated in the section last year. “I didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t fun anymore. I love the competition, but I can do other things.”

The Valley Central junior said she made the decision to walk away after states last year and even contemplated not playing last season as well.

Holbrook, who has been playing tennis since she was 8, said she will try out for soccer this fall and concentrate on lacrosse in the spring.

Holbrook said she has not spoken to Valley Central girls’ tennis coach Jeanmarie Flanagan and Valley Central has already began practicing for the season.

Holbrook, who also won the OCIAA singles title last season, defeated Wallkill’s Ariel Haber 6-2, 6-3 in the section championship last year. But now with Holbrook out of the mix, Haber, the MHAL champion, Wallkill freshman Olga Ostrovetsky and Minisink Valley’s Taylor Gurda are some of the contenders for the section championship this season.

Castro to play Division I softball

Charlise Castro was resigned to the fact that her dream of playing Division I softball was going to have to wait a year.
The Kingston catcher was touring the SUNY Ulster campus in May and even registered for classes after Division I University at Albany requested that she attend  a year of community college to improve her academic standing.
Then she would have a shot at joining the team the following season.
But then University of Maryland Eastern Shore stepped in and saved Castro from community college.
Castro, who was a Varsity845 first-teamer in basketball and softball, signed a letter of intent last Thursday to play softball at the Division I program out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
“I’m really excited and pretty relieved,” Castro, 18, said. “I always thought I could play Division I, and I worked hard for this.”
Castro, who hit .479 with five doubles, four triples, three home runs and 20 runs this season and was a New York State Class AA first-team All-Star, was playing travel ball with the Diamond Dolls at a tournament in Delaware in July when University of Maryland Eastern Shore coach Sam Douglas noticed Castro’s play behind the plate. Douglas approached Castro’s parents after the game and told them he was impressed with Castro’s athletic ability. Douglas Googled Castro and discovered she was a basketball and volleyball standout as well, and knew he needed a catcher and that she could help his team that went 1-33 last season.
Castro was impressed by the school’s southern hospitality campus and selected the Hawks over SUNY Cortland, University of Southern Connecticut, St. Peter’s College  and Albany. Castro will be one of three catchers coming in and expects to get the starting job. The school will cover 80 percent of the $22,000 yearly tuition as part of the scholarship package.
“I liked the coach and the campus, and that I would get to major in communications,” she said. “It’s a whole new team coming in this season. At any college, you would expect to compete for a starting position, and I’m excited about it.”  The 5-foot-10 Castro has played softball since she was 6 and was a first baseman the majority of her career. She didn’t make the switch to catcher until her senior season at Kingston. But Castro has always been known as a power hitter.
“Being a catcher is like blocking a ball at first base,” Castro said. “I perfected playing first base, but I’m pretty good at being a catcher, too. I think I can play anywhere. My hitting is the strongest part of my game. I have a lot of power but I’m still trying to find that perfect swing.”

Grace makes HV Empire State lacrosse team

Warwick senior goalie Mike Grace made the Hudson Valley Empire State lacrosse team.

Grace, the Varsity845 Player of the Year, will represent Section 9 lacrosse when the games begin on Wednesday, July 21 in Buffalo. Not many Section 9 lacrosse players have ever been chosen for the team, so this is a huge honor for Grace.

“I look forward to representing Section 9 as well as the Hudson Valley,” Grace said in an email Thursday.

Burke names new girls basketball coach

Matt McGinnis has been selected to replace long-time Burke Catholic coach Bob Turner as head of its girls’ basketball program, the school announced Friday.
McGinnis, a history teacher at Burke Catholic, has coached the Burke Catholic boys jayvee team.  In five years, he amassed a record of 65-30.  He is also the head coach of Burke’s varsity girls’ golf team.
McGinnis replaced Turner, who was let go in by the school in April after 27 years as the girls’ basketball coach.
“Coach McGinnis is a skilled educator and is a worthy successor to Coach Turner,” said Burke Catholic athletic director Adam Kless. “He played a major role in our boys programs recent run of success, and is fully prepared to take over the leadership of one of Section 9’s most elite girls’ basketball programs.”

Warwick falls to Lakeland Panas

MIDDLETOWN – Maybe next year.

Or the year after that.

Section 9’s winless streak in the state tournament is bound to end some day.

It just didn’t happen on Tuesday.

Section 1 champion Lakeland Panas defeated Section 9 champion Warwick 18-6  in the state Class A quarterfinals at Middletown High School.

Warwick was the third Section 9 team of the day to fall in the state quarterfinals.

As the horn sounded, the scene was more subdued than last Wednesday’s raucous celebration after Warwick captured its second Section 9 Class A championship.

“There were no tears,” said Warwick senior attackman Byron Quinn, who will play at Division III Gordon College next year. “I’m so proud of this group of guys. This group of seniors has been playing together for a long time, some since fifth grade. I’m going to miss playing with them.”

But it’s hard to feel bad for Warwick’s run the past couple of years. Warwick, which started its program in 2004, has done more in a short time than several other Section 9 teams. In addition to the back-to-back titles, the Wildcats went undefeated in the section this season and produced two U.S. Lacrosse all-Americans in Quinn and senior goalie Mike Grace.

“It’s such a great honor,” said Grace, who will play at Division II Assumption College next year. “It shows what a great defense I had in front of me. And I have this cool plaque on my wall.”

Warwick, which lost to Guilderland 10-6 in the opening round of the state tournament last year, wasn’t as competitive against Lakeland Panas. The Wildcats lost control early in the game as Lakeland Panas reeled off eight unanswered goals before James Kolesar put Warwick on the board. Warwick senior midfielder Collin Baldwin scored just before halftime, but Lakeland Panas took an 11-2 lead at the break and never looked back.

“I don’t think I’ve given up eight goals in two games,” said Grace, who finished with nine saves. “I knew at that point which way the game was going. But we tried to stay positive. The better team won today. We go out as the two-time defending champs.”

Quinn, who leads the section in scoring with 62 goals and 46 assists, had three goals and senior midfielder Collin Baldwin, James Kolesar and Sam Brown each had a goal for Warwick (17-2).

“Nobody expects anything from a Section 9 team,” Quinn said. “They’re an amazing team. It’s a level of play we’re not used to seeing. But it’s impressive what we’ve done the past couple years here.”

Robert Caffrey had eight goals and three assists and William Fallo had two goals and four assists for Lakeland Panas (19-3). Lakeland Panas will play the Long Island champion in the state semifinals 8 p.m. Thursday at Hofstra University.

Niskayuna defeats Saugerties, 17-1

MIDDLETOWN –  It was about 15 years ago, but the memory still resonates with Saugerties coach Bob Slate.

Slate was the boys’ lacrosse varsity coach at Kingston back in 1995 when he took his team up to the Albany area to play a Section 2 team.

Kingston , of course, was blown out, and the opposing coach had left his starters in the whole game.

But that wasn’t the worst part. Slate read a press clipping after the game that said, “We’re gonna show them what Section 2 lacrosse is.”

“That still sticks with me,” Slate said. “It makes me get up every day and try to get better.”

For now, Section 2 is still showing Section 9 how to play lacrosse.

Section 2 champion Niskayuna defeated Saugerties 17-1 in the state quarterfinals Tuesday at Middletown High School .

Niskayuna defeated Saugerties, which has won eight consecutive Section 9 Class B championships, 20-0 in the opening round of the state tournament last year. And a Section 9 Class B team has never won a state tournament game.

But there is some good news for Saugerties. Niskayuna is moving up to Class A next year.

“They’re an exceptional program,” Slate said. “You have to look at all the work they put in. They start young and they play a competitive schedule. We’re (Section 9) still trying to catch up.”

Saugerties was playing catch up from the start. Niskayuna took a 6-0 lead on Bobby Horan’s goal before Saugerties junior attackman Sean Gilbane snuck up from behind the cage and scored the Sawyers’ only goal at the 1:50 mark in the first quarter.

Then Saugerties was down 11-1 at halftime and lost senior midfielder Vito Massa to a knee injury in the third quarter. Massa , along with Minisink Valley ’s Kevin Freeman,  was selected to play in the U.S. Lacrosse senior showcase next month.

“At least we didn’t get shut out this year,” Gilbane said. “I guess we’re lucky. I think we gave them more of a game this year. You can’t just come in there and give up. You have to at least try and give them a run.”

Horan and Justin McKinney each had three goals and an assist for Niskayuna (17-4).

Brian Schlansker added two goals and four assists for the Silver Warriors.

Saugerties goalie Mike Pfeiffer had 11 saves.

Saugerties (13-3) loses 10 seniors and the school is in danger of cutting jayvee programs next year.

“There is nothing the kids should feel bad about,” Slate said. “A lot of teams are not playing this time of year. Every year, you have to retool and try to improve.”
