Marist men win defensive tussle with Bucknell

Defense was the name of the game as Marist posted one of its finest defensive efforts in school history on Wednesday night.

Marist beat Bucknell, 55-40, setting a Division I school record for its fewest points allowed against a NCAA Division I opponent since the program moved up to that level in 1981-82.

Marist (4-3) scored the first 10 points of the game and Bucknell (2-3) drew no closer than six the rest of the way. The Red Foxes took a 29-17 lead into halftime.

Ryan Stilphen scored 10 points and Ben Farmer added nine to lead Marist, winners of three in a row. Ryan Schneider and David Devezin each had eight points.

Justin Castleberry shot 3-for-11 and led Bucknell with nine points. The Bison shot 21 percent from the floor in the first half and 32 percent for the game. Bucknell’s 10-game home win streak came to an end.

The Marist Div. I record for fewest points allowed was set on Nov. 26, 1985, when the Red Foxes beat Div. III Suffolk (Mass.) 69-34. It was Marist’s lowest winning score since beating Canisius, 52-51, on Jan. 31, 1998.

This was the worst Bucknell offensive showing since a 68-27 loss at Princeton on Dec. 9, 1998.
