Marist grad takes over at S.F. State

Marist graduate Kristina Danella was named women’s basketball head coach at San Francisco State University on Monday. She went 18-10 at Urbana in 2013-14, and 65-25 in the last three seasons at Caldwell. She was 25-6 this season, guiding Caldwell to its first NCAA Div. II tourney appearance and was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference coach of the year.
Danella played two seasons at Marist (2011-13) after transferring from Massachusetts. She played in two NCAA Div. I tournaments with the Red Foxes. As a senior, she won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year award, led the MAAC in 3-point shooting (.410), ranked 12th nationally in free throw shooting (.887) and averaged nine points and four rebounds.
“I am honored and pleased to be named the next head women’s basketball coach at San Francisco State,” Danella said. “I want to thank President Wong, director of athletics Charles Guthrie and the search committee for the opportunity to join this amazing community. Charles is relentless in his efforts to surpass all expectations at San Francisco State. Under his leadership, the decision to become a Gator was not only an easy choice but the right one for my family and me. I will work tirelessly to create a culture of excellence in everything that we do. I am more than thrilled to call San Francisco State my new home.”
“Kristina is a rising star with a competitive spirit,” Guthrie said. “She has turned two different programs completely around from not winning to winning. She has made postseason appearances multiple times as a head coach and student athlete, and she has an overall winning record everywhere she has coached in women’s basketball. We were highland impressed with her in-depth tactical knowledge of women’s basketball, organizational structure, energy, ability to connect with the student athletes on and off the court and her California networks.”
San Francisco State was 4-23 last season.

Danella is one of at least 18 former players who were coached by Marist head coach Brian Giorgis who went into the coaching ranks. Here is a link to a July 2012 story about Giorgis’ extensive coaching tree.
An update to that 2012 story has Stephanie Del Preore as head coach at Long Island University, and Nikki Flores and Emily Stallings as assistants at American University, under former Giorgis assistant Megan Gebbia. Erin (Leger) Doughty is married now and still on Giorgis’ bench. Alisa Kresge left Marist in June 2016 to become associate head coach at the University of Vermont.
