Division III championships: Da’mani Burns. A.J. Aeberli advance to national quarterfinals

Newburgh Free Academy graduate and Johnson & Wales junior Da’mani Burns picked up two wins during the Friday morning session and advanced to the Division III 149-pound national quarterfinals at Ferrum (Va.) College.

Burns (32-4), the top seed, pinned Kevin Kelly of Loras in 27 seconds in the preliminary round and won by fall over John Carroll’s Jarrad Lasko in 37 seconds in the round of 16 for his 24th pin of the season. The 2015 Varsity 845 wrestler of the year faces eighth-seeded Gregory Warner of York (Pa.) in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Minisink Valley graduate and 2016 state champion A.J. Aeberli defeated Ithaca’s Chibueze Chukwuezi 5-3 to advance to the 174-pound quarterfinals. Aeberli, a junior at the Coast Guard Academy, is the fifth seed.

Saugerties graduate and Oneonta senior 285-pounder James Bethel is the top seed at 285 pounds. Bethel, a three-time all-American, wrestles Jerhett Lee of Ozarks (Ark.) in the round of 16.
