Johnson Wagner is ranked 119th in the world.
The 1998 James I. O’Neill graduate is 29th in the FedEx Cup points standings and 34th on the PGA Tour money list.
All the rankings aren’t enough for Wagner to be exempt for the U.S.
Open, which will be held June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San
Diego, Calif.
So Wagner will head to section qualifying unless he is in the top 50 in
the world rankings by May 26 or wins a PGA Tour tournament in the next
two weeks.
He’s made the U.S. Open two times (2002 at Shinnecock and 2007 at Oakmont) through section qualifying.
Wagner is playing this week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at
Colonial in Ft. Worth, Texas. He usually plays really well in Texas so
I expect Wagner to make the cut and contend for the title. Plus, he’s
well-rested. He didn’t play in the AT&T Classic last week.
For all the golf junkies out there, here are the exemptions into the U.S. Open field
