Guess who is leading Phil by two at Colonial
You guess it…Johnson Wagner. The PGA Tour must be making a tour stop in Texas because Wagner, a 1998 James I. O’Neill graduate, is atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Thursday.
Wagner fired a 7-under 63, which included two bogeys on a day with gusty wind.
“I’d take hitting the ball like this every day of my life,” Wagner told The Golf Channel. “It was a great day.”
Wagner’s round even impressed Phil Mickelson, who shot a 5-under.
“I couldn’t believe there was a 7-under score out there today,” Mickelson said.
If Wagner can hold on to the lead for three more rounds, he’ll punch a ticket to Torrey Pines and the U.S. Open as a multiple-winner on the PGA Tour in a calendar year. Ian Baker-Finch is the last first-round leader to win at Colonial in 1989. Wagner had a wire-to-wire win at the Houston Open in April.
Guess what Wagner shot in the first round of the Houston Open? Yep, a 63. Go figure.
