Rodriguez one win away from MGA title

Cornwall sophomore Ryan Rodriguez defeated Rye’s James McHugh 4 and 2 Friday morning to advance to the Metropolitan Golf Association Boys’ Championship final at Bedford Golf & Tennis Club.

Rodriguez, 15,  made back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th hole to extended his lead to three holes. He clinched the match with par on the par-5, 16th hole.

The 2013 Section 9 champion will play Bear Carlson of Katonah in the final at 1 p.m. Friday. Carlson plays most of his golf at Bedford.

Rodriguez is bidding to become the first area player to win the Boys title since Mark Constanza of Tuxedo Club in 2003. Taylor Walsh, a 1998 Ellenville graduate, won the championship in 1995.
