Powelton Club hosts Met Amateur qualifier Thursday

Washingtonville’s Matt Dickson, Kingston’s Scott Kleeschulte and Monroe-Woodbury graduate Tom McHugh are among the local golfers competing at the Met Amateur qualifier Thursday at Powelton Club in Newburgh.

Dickson, who will be a senior at Washingtonville, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur last month. Kleeschulte, a rising senior at Kingston, won the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association high school championship in May and recently tied for second at the Ulster County Amateur. McHugh, who played collegiately at Division I Iona, was the Section 9 high school champion as a Monroe-Woodbury senior in 2011.

The top five golfers plus ties advance to the Met Amateur on August 3-6 at Laurel Links Country Club in Laurel.

Other local golfers in the field are Cody Cox, a 2013 Delaware Valley (Pa.) graduate, Washingtonville graduate Connor McKallen, Powelton Club’s Pat Mainey and Scott Worsdale of Otterkill.

Cox, who played at Division I Penn State, was a two-time U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier in high school.
