DeForest leads 5 State Open qualifiers out of Powelton

Cottekill’s Andrew DeForest fired a 1-under-par 69 and advanced to the New York State Open with a third-place finish at the tournament’s Hudson Valley qualifier Tuesday at Powelton Club in Newburgh.

DeForest, a two-time Section 9 champion in 2009 and 2010, carded an eagle on the par-5, fourth hole and added three birdies.

Joining DeForest, a 2010 Section 9 champion at the State Open on July 16-18 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale are Devlin Walsh of Tarry Brae, who tied for fourth with an even-par 70, and Eldred graduate David Powers, Washingtonville graduate Matt Dickson and Valley Central graduate Josh Kienz, who all tied for 12th with 1-over 71s.

Walsh eagled the par-5, 11th hole and had four birdies. Dickson and Powers both had an eagle on No. 4.

Missing the cut were Joe Condomitti (Tuxedo Club, Cornwall graduate) 72; John Stoltz (Concord, Minisink Valley graduate) 72; Geoff DeMarco (Powelton Club) 72; Henry Bosch (Southern Dutchess, Eldred graduate) 74; Jake Hommel (Wiltwyck, Kingston graduate) 74; Jeff Schaller (Twaalfskill, Kingston graduate) 74; Justin Lane (Woodstock) 75; Pat Mainey (Powelton Club) 75; Tommy Lucas (West Hills) 79; Sean Moroney (Powelton Club) 79.
