Season’s end

Back home from my Troy excursion. What a way to end the local basketball season, huh? You really have to feel for those Seward girls, I can’t imagine a tougher way to lose a basketball game.

Officiating was a big topic of discussion after the game. Personally, I thought there was rough inside play at both ends of the floor. And Hammond had just six more free throws adn two less fouls than Seward, so it’s not like the whistles were one-sided.

As far as the Seward timeout that was never called, I think it was bad luck more than anything. Seward’s bench happened to be at the opposite end of where all the action was. If the Seward bench is on the other side of the court, I bet that timeout gets called.

But to the folks who think Seward was screwed out of a state title, just listen to Seward senior Jillian Harter, who may have wanted that title more than anyone:

“You can’t take anything back,” she told me after the game. “What am I going to say, ‘If I didn’t miss a free throw or if we made this one,’ it could have been different?’”

As devastated as Harter was, she still gets it. Life isn’t always fair, happy endings aren’t a given. Sometimes you just have to swallow hard and move on. I wish some adults showed the same maturity Harter did.

Now all that’s left to do is put together our annual All-Star team. No choices by position here, just the top 15 players in the area.

Bring on the spring!
