Slice of spring training, Marlboro style

Marlboro High graduate Rob Bell is trying to hang on with the Washington Nationals. Neil Fino, Bell’s high school coach, went down to visit the right-hander in spring training last week and a reporter for The Florida Today happened by as Fino watched.

VIERA – A hearty crowd turned out at Carl Barger Complex on Sunday to watch Washington Nationals pitchers, catchers and a few position players go through their first official workout of the spring.

Among the visitors was a former high school baseball coach checking up on a pitcher who used to star for him in the 90s. Neil Fino made the trip down from Marlboro, N.Y., to catch up with Rob Bell, a 31-year-old right-hander who pitched for the Orioles last season, and is a non-roster invitee for the Nationals this spring.

“I coached for 28 years, and he was without a doubt the best pitcher I ever had,” said Fino, who was proudly watching the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Bell pitch a bullpen session. “His senior year, he was unhittable.”
