Chapel Field-Fort Ann

Chapel Field is down 5-0 in the fourth.

Just heard this from Section 9 chairman Dave Onusko…..Chapel Field trails 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

I will provide updates on this game as I receive them. I am covering the Valley Central-Lindenhurst game. The Chapel Field game is being played roughly 10 minutes away. We have a photographer there, so look for those photos in Sunday’s paper.

Saturday’s state baseball semifinals

As I mentioned a few weeks back, I think baseball is one of the toughest sports to try to predict. The logistics of the game and the schedule at the high school level also makes it tough to scout. Football teams have plenty of video. Same with basketball. Baseball? The only people who videotape those games are parents.

Valley Central and Chapel Field are taking the right approach Saturday. They’re just going to go out and play. If it’s pitched to you, hit it. If it’s hit to you, catch it. Do everything you’re supposed to do fundamentally. Throw in a few spectaular plays on defense and take your chances with the whole package.

I will be in Binghamton, though not in two places at the same time. But we have a photographer who will alternate between the teams. Trust me, we’ll make it all work in the end. I will have updates as I get them, either on the Playoffs Plus scoreboard, or on this blog.

Scalo returns at Upstate-Downstate classic

Monroe-Woodbury senior quarterback Dan Scalo made a successful return to football Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to reconsider his decision not to play college football.

Scalo, a Class AA state co-player of the year, was named the most valuable player of the Upstate-Downstate New York State High School Football Classic on Sunday.

He completed 8-of-10 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns – one each to Monroe-Woodbury teammates Patrick Laird and Jared McFarlin. He also ran for 34 yards on 10 carries. The Downstate team won 36-7 at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome.

Newburgh Free Academy’s Fred Locklary, Barry Surrett and Marcus Spearman played on defense. Ellenville’s A.J Borriello played on the offensive line. Warwick’s John Babin was a receiver. Scalo said a touchdown pass to Babin was negated by a penalty.

“It was a lot fun. I really didn’t know what expect,” Scalo said. “But there were a good group of guys on our team. It was a nice experience to be around the whole brotherhood thing again.”

Scalo, a two-time Varsity845 player of the year, played his last two years of high school in various levels of shoulder pain. He played his entire junior year with a torn labrum, and never really felt he bounced back from the off-season surgery. Still, he led Monroe-Woodbury to its sixth straight Section 9 Class AA title.

So he told college recruiters over the winter that he did not plan to play college football this fall. That hasn’t changed after this pain-free performance. Scalo plans to attend Pace University and its business school. He won’t play football – this year.

“I hope to transfer and play somewhere else, if I can play,” Scalo said.
