Hey, it’s baseball weather

…well, almost. It’s still too cold to use those jacked-up bats, but at least teams can get outside and throw a little bit. Nothing like trying to field a grounder that takes a bad hop on a frozen, rock-hard field. I once caught one in the braces (on my teeth then, knees now). I walked around for [...]

Baseball is coming

Forms have been sent out, requesting information from coaches, The plan is to begin weekly pages, beginning  March 31. So that means my first scheduled baseball page will be April 1. Undoubtedly, there will be no shortage of opinions on who will be good this season. The kids change, but here’s what doesn’t – pitching and [...]

All-state teams and my involvement

I contribute when asked, but have not been asked for any boys’ basketball feedback for this section all year – and that includes state rankings. Last time I heard, there was an Albany-area guy who pulled stuff off our Web site for Section 9 recognition. Nothing like having your finger on the pulse, huh? Regardless, [...]

An open invitation

We just released our boys’ basketball all-star teams. There were three teams, each with five players. We didn’t have a set number of positions we fill. We didn’t have a big-school, small-school quota. We didn’t have an OCIAA -MHAL quota. College potential didn’t matter. AAU ball didn’t. We tried to find the 15 kids within our circulation area who had [...]

Important message

I hope everybody enjoyed what was a great weekend for Section 9 boys’ basketball. There only was one close game (Minisink Valley-Newburgh Free Academy), but it was a classic that will be remembered for years. Tremendous work out of New Paltz yesterday. The first thing coach Frank Alfonso said was that he wasn’t going to let [...]

That’s why they play 32 minutes

Minisink Valley capped off an amazing Section 9 season, rallying from a 16-point late third-quarter deficit to beat Newburgh 60-57 for the Class AA title. You can make a case even my hairstyle looks better than those mohawks, but there’s no denying Minisink Valley’s heart and desire. Just a great job by a group of athletes [...]

Congratulations, Coleman Catholic

Great job out of Coleman Catholic, winning the Section 9 Class D title Friday night at SUNY Orange. The two biggest stars of the game were Coleman’s Cody Vincent and Chapel Field’s Matt Pooley.  Vincent’s job was to guard Pooley, the area’s leading scorer. Pooley finished with 33 points, but Vincent held him to just [...]
