Random thoughts on a chilly Friday night

If you haven’t checked out the results of the this year’s coaches poll, I would encourage you to do so. Thanks for all who participated for your time and honesty. I got a little ambitious heading into the final month of the regular season by stretching out the rankings to 20 teams. On the first night [...]

Kevin Witt’s new top 10 (along with No. 11-20)

They’ll be tipping off through the Section 9 on Friday night, with the Regents tests and that week-long break safely in the rear-view mirror. Look for OCIAA and MHAL division races to be decided in the next few weeks. No change in the top seven spots of this poll. Coleman Catholic, ranked among the top [...]

Smashmouth Awards play of the year

It was Warwick’s Sam Careccia making a one-handed catch on a pass from Rian White in the first Monroe-Woodbury game. Check out the video on the main sports page. Thanks to all who voted – and then voted again. I was there for that catch and remember thinking it certainly will be a candidate. Then [...]

Tuesday night thoughts

Middletown raised its record to 10-0 with an 83-33 victory home over Valley Central. I caught the first quarter, with video camera in tow, so I could get some highlights for this week’s basketball show. It didn’t take long to find them. Middletown led 28-8 after the first quarter. This would be a good time [...]

The week ahead after MLK day

On Tuesday…. Port Jervis, a surprising 7-3 travels to Burke Catholic (Ranked third in last KWitt poll) for a 7 p.m. start. I’ve been hearing good things about Port Jervis 6-foot-5 freshman Stan Buczek. Burke continues to roll. Kingston plays at Minisink Valley at 7:30 p.m. Kingston’s DaVonne Dunlap will the best player on the floor. But [...]

Dan Scalo’s immediate future

Monroe-Woodbury senior quarterback Dan Scalo has told the colleges recruiting him that he is not going to play football this fall. Read Saturday’s Times Herald-Record to get [...]

Russell Corley injured

Fallsburg has been without starting sophomore point guard Russell Corley since Jan. 2, because of a “displaced fracture in his face,” coach Pete Dworetsky said. Corley was hurt in a collision during the game with a Sullivan West player. Dworetsky hopes the injury doesn’t turn out to be season-ending.
