Tuesday pre-game tournament thoughts

First off, our apologies for the scoreboard/stats portion of the program not working on Monday. I’ve been told it is being addressed. Good first night of the tournament. Sorry to see Ron Semerano’s coaching career end. He’s one of the good guys.  Wasn’t shocked to see Spackenkill beat Onteora, as I wrote on Monday.

Let’s move to Tuesday…..

(5 seed)Warwick at (4)Kingston, Class AA quarterfinals – Kingston beat Warwick 66-44 Jan. 21 at Kingston. I’m not saying Kingston is 22 points better Tuesday night, but I would be stunned if Kingston loses here. Keep in mind, though, Warwick is 4-1 over the last month. Winner plays at Newburgh in the semifinals on Thursday.

(6)Monroe-Woodbury at (3)Minisink Valley, Class AA quarterfinals – Minisink Valley beat Monroe-Woodbury 51-43 on Dec. 18. I wouldn’t be surprised what happens here, either way. Winner plays at Middletown in the semifinals on Thursday.

(4)Livingston Manor at (1)John A. Coleman Catholic, Class D semifinals – The first meeting of the year for these teams. Coleman Catholic is the three-time defending champs and should be considered a strong favorite to reach the title game on Friday.

(2)Chapel Field at (3) Eldred, Class D semifinals – This was scheduled to be a home game for Chapel Field as the higher seed, but since it doesn’t have a gym – and couldn’t make an alternate arrangement – the game is moved to Eldred. These teams split their two games this year. Both were played in Eldred. Eldred won 53-48 on Dec. 16. Chapel Field won 45-26 on Feb. 5. Chapel Field is 6-1 over the last month. Eldred is 3-4. Still, probably a toss-up because of the gym.

Monday pre-game Section 9 tournament thoughts

Finally, this thing kicks off. I’m going to check in with each day’s matchups

(8 seed) Port Jervis at (1) Cornwall, Class A quarterfinals – Cornwall coach Tom Howe goes for his 300th victory. This will be the third time the teams have played this season.  Cornwall won the first two – 63-41 and 79-47 – and should be considered a heavy favorite to win here.

(5) Wallkill at (4) Rondout Valley, Class A quarterfinals – Third meeting between these MHAL Division I teams. Rondout Valley won the first two, including a 56-36 victory on Feb. 5.  Wallkill is just 1-5 over the last month, the worst of the 30 Section 9 tournament teams. Rondout Valley has to be considered the favorite.

(7)New Paltz at (2) Red Hook, Class A quarterfinals - This will be the third meeting between these MHAL Division II teams. Red Hook won the first two – 68-39 and 84-37.  New Paltz hasn’t played since February 9, which can’t help. Red Hook is a big favorite here.

(6)Monticello at (3)Saugerties, Class A quarterfinals – These teams have not played each other this year. Saugerties is 3-2 over the last month, Monticello is 2-3. I wouldn’t be surprised however this one goes.

(5)Spackenkill at (4)Onteora, Class B quarterfinals - This will be the third game between the MHAL Division III teams. Onteora won two close ones – 64-62 and 61-59.  Both teams are 4-2 over the last month. Spackenkill seems a little more well-rounded on offense, and gets its third crack at stopping Max Taylor.

(7)Rhinebeck at (2)Pine Plains, Class C quarterfinals - Rhinebeck beat Pine Plains 56-53 on Dec. 18.

(6)Tuxedo at (3)Millbrook, Class C quarterfinals – This will be the first teams these teams have played each other. Millbrook has won five of the last six titles, and is the two-time defending champion.

(5)Fallsburg at (4)Chester, Class C quarterfinals – Chester won the first two meetings between these teams – 42-34 and 57-54 and has a 5-1 record over the last month. Fallsburg is 1-4 over that same stretch.

Who’s hot/who’s not

Here is a look at the records of the Section 9 tournament teams since January 26 – one month from today. This should provide some insight on the teams primed to have good tournaments.

Red Hook (6-0) – One of just eight remaining unbeaten teams in the state.

S.S. Seward (6-0)

Newburgh (7-1)

Chapel Field (6-1)

Burke Catholic (5-1)

Chester (5-1) – Not considered a traditional local power, so it might be a surprise. But this run got it into the tournament.

Coleman Catholic (5-1)

Marlboro (5-1) – Caught a tough break being in Red Hook’s division.

James I. O’Neill (4-1)

Warwick (4-1) – One of these victories was over OCIAA Division II champ Minisink Valley. Gavin Hannah averages 14.1 ppg.

Cornwall (4-1)

Middletown (5-2)

Onteora (4-2) – Opponents double-teamed Max Taylor after a white-hot start, but he still is the section’s second-leading scorer.

Spackenkill (4-2)

Livingston Manor (4-2)

Millbrook (4-2)

Saugerties (3-2) – Adam Lindhorst among the top 10 in section scorers (17.6 ppg)

Minisink Valley (3-2)

Rondout Valley (3-3)

Pine Plains (3-3)

Kingston (2-2)

Eldred (3-4) – Lost to semifinal opponent Chapel Field during this stretch, but won earlier in the season.

Monticello (2-3)

Rhinebeck (2-4)

Tuxedo (2-4) – In its final game, beat Chapel Field by a point and qualified.

Port Jervis (2-4)

New Paltz (1-3) – Tough to get out of a slump when you only have four games over the final month.

Fallsburg (1-4)

Wallkill (1-5)

Kevin Witt’s new top 10 (along with 11-20)

Your second-to-last rankings of the year, with the Section 9 tournaments beginning on Monday.

(RECORDS THROUGH FEBRUARY 25)

 1. Newburgh Free Academy (15-2): Missed out on a nice test, when its game at nationally ranked Saint Benedict’s Prep was canceled.

2. Red Hook (18-0): Could feel like it has something to prove as the second seed in the Class A tournament.

3. Middletown (16-2): Feels like it narrowed the gap between itself and Newburgh, and will try to win its first sectional title since 2001.

4. Cornwall (16-2): Faces Port Jervis on Monday for the third time this season. Cornwall won the first two games.

5. Burke Catholic (15-3): Approaching the first step in its goal of getting to Glens Falls.

6. Kingston (10-8): Idle the last week, but it jumps a spot after Minisink Valley lost.

7. Minisink Valley (13-5): Should be favored to beat Monroe-Woodbury in the Class AA quarterfinals.

8. Coleman Catholic (15-2): Looks to defend its sectional title, after a great showing in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League.

9. S.S. Seward (16-1): Saturday’s scheduled game with Liberty could be a nice tune up.

10. Marlboro (14-4): Is anybody else seeing a potential Marlboro-Burke Catholic Class B final?

11. James I. O’Neill (13-5)

12. Monroe-Woodbury (10-8)

13. Warwick (10-8)

14. Saugerties (10-7)

15. Spackenkill (10-8)

16. Onteora (12-6)

17. Port Jervis (9-9)

18. New Paltz (7-7)

Section 9 preview show

I’m going to be taping it Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully, it will be up and posted by the end of the day. I’m doing this before the seeding meeting that’s scheduled for Tuesday night, but the way I see things going isn’t going to change regardless.

Post your thoughts below on the upcoming tournaments.

Newburgh-Middletown thoughts; Section 9 seedings

Just wanted to check in with some thoughts on the Middletown-Newburgh Free Academy game last Friday night at Newburgh. It’s a little hard to squeeze in all the Xs and Os into a game story, especially when you only have about 25 minutes to write it.

You could tell the “wow” factor of playing Newburgh had worn off with Middletown. The Middies came out in a 1-3-1 zone, which led to a ton of forced long-range Newburgh shots. Newburgh shot 6-for-16 in the first quarter, 8-for-22 in the second. Middletown hit the boards much harder this time, and was much more willing to take the ball to the basket. Middletown led 19-18 after the first quarter.

I thought Middletown was in trouble when Marcus Henderson’s driving layup gave Newburgh a 28-23 lead with 4:01 left in the first half. But Middletown’s Shaquille Green scored on a fast-break layup and Nick Smith made a layup to cut the lead to 28-27. Smith – the tallest player on the floor at 6-foot-5 – picked up his second foul with 2:39 left in the half and was pulled out. Newburgh immediately went inside, scoring three baskets from in close. Still, Middletown only trailed 37-32 at the half.

Newburgh’s Will Bouton told me later that coach Frank Dinnocenzio got into them a little bit at halftime, but apparently it took some time for those words to take. Middletown opened the half on 17-7 run and led 49-44 with 3:52 left in the third quarter.

The Newburgh got running. This was the stretch where Bouton scored 12 points in a 16-0 Newburgh run. Newburgh led 65-56 after three quarters. Then Middletown opened the fourth with four turnovers in the first 85 seconds. Newburgh made its first five shots and used an 11-0 run to make it a 20-point game. So Newburgh went from down five points to up 20 in just 6:33 of clock time. Very impressive.

A lot of folks think they will meet again for the Section 9 Class AA title and I agree with that. I’ll save the prediction for Friday’s paper, when my Section 9 hoops preview is scheduled to run. I’ve got some different features I’m looking forward to giving you.

I’m hoping the Section 9 tournament draw will be available Tuesday night. When I get it, you get it.

Kevin Witt’s new top 10 (along with 11-20)

The regular season will be coming to a close over the next few days, with the Section 9 tournaments beginning as early as Thursday.

After a light week due to holidays and snow, there was just one change from last week’s poll: Minisink Valley and Kingston flip-flopped their places.

RECORDS THROUGH FEBRUARY 17

1. Newburgh (14-2): Snow pushed its game against nationally ranked Saint Benedict’s Prep to Monday at Newark, N.J.

2. Red Hook (17-0): Faces Coleman Catholic for the MHAL title Friday at SUNY Ulster. Red Hook is the defending champion.

3. Middletown (16-1): Can clinch a tie for the OCIAA Division I title with a victory Friday at Newburgh.

4. Cornwall (16-2): Jumped three places to No. 6 in the latest Class A rankings. Will be the top Section 9 seed in that class.

5. Burke Catholic (15-3): Will be the top seed in the Section 9 Class B tournament. Ranked fifth in the state in that class.

6. Minisink Valley (13-4): Can close out an unbeaten OCIAA Division II schedule with a victory Friday at Warwick.

7. Kingston (10-8): Four of its eight losses came to Newburgh and Middletown.

8. Coleman Catholic (15-1): Will be the underdog against Red Hook on Friday, but the top seed in the upcoming Section 9 Class D tournament.

9. S.S. Seward (15-1): Pushed two spots to No. 13 in the state Class C rankings. Will be the top seed in that class in the Section 9 tournament.

10. Marlboro (12-4): Should end up with a home game in the Section 9 Class B tournament.

11. James I. O’Neill (12-5)

12. Monroe-Woodbury (10-8)

13. Saugerties (10-7)

14. Spackenkill (10-7)

15. Warwick (9-8)

16. Onteora (12-6)

17. Port Jervis (9-9)

18. New Paltz (7-7)

19. Chapel Field (11-5)

20. Chester (9-8)
