33 straight hours of Olympic TV, give or take
My wife does not understand me, nor would most people who know I just spent 33 consecutive hours watching the Olympics on TV … give or take an hour.
Okay, I have an excuse this time. I just wrote a column detailing my “24 hours of Olympic TV” (that only took me up to 7:30 on Monday night, and I still had to watch NBC’s prime time and late night, and then some USA late-night). I believe over the course of one day I viewed badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, canoe/kayak, (track) cycling, diving, equestrian (show jumping), field hockey, gymnastics, soccer, softball, synchronized swimming, table tennis, track and field, trampoline, triathlon, volleyball, water polo and weightlifting. I missed team handball and wrestling.
Here’s a link for my newspaper column. Apparently, one of my copy editors has decided to re-name me “Kevin” but I can assure you my first name is “Ken.” Here’s a link to my story on the Wallkill horse that won a gold medal on Monday.
What can I say? I’ve been a huge fan of the Olympics since I was a kid. I still remember watching the 1972 Munich Games and 1976 Montreal Games, and being fascinated with the “odd-ball” sports that I had never seen before: team handball, fencing, track cycling, men’s and women’s indoor volleyball, shooting, weightlifting (when you are 8 years old with one TV in a house of many kids, all you know are the basics of baseball, football, basketball and ice hockey).
It’s many years later and many of those sports I just mentioned still hardly get their due on TV, so I appreciate the opportunity to take a closer look at them.
