Monday Night "Classic" Baseball
The arrival of the MLB (Major League Baseball) Network on New Year’s Day, with 50 million customers via the major cable TV and satellite TV providers, has given ESPN a little shove to provide some more baseball programming.
You might say it’s Monday Night Baseball (for those of you who remember the series on NBC and ABC) on ESPN Classic. Starting Jan. 5 and running through March, the network will air an historic telecast at 8 p.m.
Here is the early schedule:
Jan. 5: 1990 opening day, Baltimore at Kansas City, the first MLB broadcast on ESPN
Jan. 12: 1991 World Series, Game 7, Atlanta at Minnesota: Jack Morris pitches a 10-inning shutout for the Twins
Jan. 19: 1992 NLCS Game 7, Pittsburgh at Atlanta: Francisco Cabrera knocks in Sid Bream with the pennant-clinching run in a dramatic ninth inning
Jan. 26: 1993 World Series, Game 6, Philadelphia at Toronto: Joe Carter hits a three-run home run to clinch the title for the Blue Jays. Touch ‘em all, Joe.
Feb. 2: 1994, California at Texas: Kenny Rogers becomes first left-hander in AL history to throw a perfect game
Feb. 9: 1995, California at Baltimore: Cal Ripken Jr. breaks Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-games streak at 2,131 games
Feb. 16: 1996 World Series, Game 4, Yankees at Atlanta: Yankees come back from a 6-0 deficit to win on Wade Boggs’ bases-loaded walk
Feb. 23: 1997 World Series, Game 7, Cleveland at Florida: Marlins become first wild-card playoff team to win the World Series
