Drawing the line on classic sports coverage
Okay, I can see the desire to watch old sports programming. There’s classic games, the opportunity to watch all-stars from different eras and the thrill of hearing broadcast greats.
However, the NHL Network and NBA TV will use some of its air time over the next two weeks to air coverage of past player drafts. You have to be beyond hard-core fan status to watch two, three or four hours of coverage that now fills lines in encyclopedias.
Since I’m a nice guy, here’s what those networks will provide:
NHL Network — 2005 draft, June 21, 6 a.m.; 2006 draft, June 22, 6 a.m.; 2007 draft, June 23, 6 a.m.; June 24, 2008 draft, 6 a.m.; June 25, 2009 draft, 6 a.m.
NBA TV — June 21, 1996 draft at noon, 1998 at 2 p.m., 2001 at 4 p.m., 2003 at 6 p.m.; June 22, 1984 draft at noon, 1985 at 2 p.m.; 1986 at 4 p.m., 1987 at 6 p.m.
By the way, if you haven’t figured it out yet, both leagues will hold their annual player drafts next week. The NBA will hold its draft on Thursday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. The NHL will hold its 2010 draft on Friday-Saturday, June 25-26. The first round will air on Versus at 7 p.m. on Friday. Rounds two through seven will air on NHL Network starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
