Rich DeMarco and Dean Darling spent most of Saturday morning and afternoon working together as broadcast partners on the Army football radio network from West Point.
Once the game was over, though, they headed in separate cars to Poughkeepsie to call the Army-Marist men’s basketball game. DeMarco went solo on the Army radiocast on WBNR (1260-AM) and WLNA (1420-AM) and Darling was joined by Ed Weir on the Marist radiocast on WKIP (1450-AM).
“It’s been a long day,’’ Darling laughed. “It started at 11:30 this morning on the air, but we met at 8 o’clock, and now we’re up here doing a basketball game. I love the challenge of it. You go from a four-and-a-half hour broadcast, you drive 45 minutes north, get something to eat and then you do a couple hours. It’s a challenge of, Can you do it?’’
“I think it’s awesome,’’ DeMarco said. “It’s what it’s all about when you call games. You want do to every single game. You find a way to do the game, no matter what. It worked out where we had the game at West Point, we were able to head up here to Marist and I look forward to doing it.’’
Army football posted a victory over Fordham on Senior Day at Michie Stadium, so the evening contest is going to send one of the broadcasters home with a loss.
“One of us has to end up 1-1,” DeMarco said.
