I have to admit that I was completely skeptical of “Southland” weeks before it even aired. I’m a huge fan of hard boiled L.A. detective/police novels. The City of Angels is a gritty dark place with a history of even darker goings on within its own LAPD. I wondered how NBC was going to place a cop drama in L.A. while making it modern and believable. Their answer was great casting and superb writing. In less than one hour I was hooked. This has become an hour of television that I look forward to each week.

I know I’ve said it before but Michael Cudlitz’s Officer John Cooper is one of the most captivating characters on TV today. A lot of his dialogue is fast, sharp and under scored with years of seeing humanity at it’s worst. This week we get another glimpse deeper and as it answers some of our questions it also begets new ones.

Also happy to see C. Thomas Howell sticking around and great guest spot by Tom Sizemore.
