“Castle” Takes a Trip Down “Firefly” Lane
I’m a little bummed that the World Series is messin’ with Halloween this year. I really look forward to seeing my favorite shows celebrate Halloween. Thankfully “Castle” came through with a really fun episode that stayed true to their brand of storytelling.
The episode starts with Rick trying on a Halloween costume that looked vaguely familiar to us Nathan Fillion fans. When daughter Alexis asked what he was supposed to be he replied “space cowboy”. To which she replies, “Didn’t you wear that like five years ago?” His reply of, “So?” garnered her, “So don’t you think you should move on?”
If one was listening closely you could probably hear the legions of “Firefly” and “Serenity” fans everywhere shrieking.
Castle is called out by Beckett to a murder scene in a graveyard. The victim had real fangs and was killed by a stake through the heart. This leads Castle and Beckett to all kinds of crazy people including a girl who really drinks blood, a man who believes he’s a real vampire and a dead werewolf.
One of the relationships that I really love watching on “Castle” is the one between Rick and Alexis. It’s not a typical parent/child relationship and always veers away from the predictable.
I love that this goofy man-child is completely dedicated to his daughter. He strives to be a better person, to do the right thing and to be a role model for her. They have some of the sweetest parent/child scenes on TV.
This show really knows how to utilize their writing staff. The writers have taken their time to unveil the characters, allowing us to see relationships grow. I love the camaraderie with Castle, Det. Esposito and Det. Ryan. It reminds one that at the heart of every man is a twelve year old boy!
Also good are Castle’s family relationships and their understanding of his and Beckett’s complicated relationship. Castle and Beckett’s relationship is interesting and complex. The writer’s have created endless possibilities for future story-lines with the solid foundation that they’ve built.
Thanks “Castle” for keeping it spooky this Halloween. It was a great way to end a Monday night.
