Tuesday 4:45 p.m.: We have a breed winner!

Lukas (Am./Can. Ch. Oakwood V Kaitler Revival) is the top dog in the German Pinscher breed and will move to the Best of Group competition (Working).

Lukas is a 3-year-old male native of Port Jervis. His breeder is Kimberle Schiff, also of Port Jervis.

“At this level of competition, we’re just glad to be here,” Schiff said. “A group placement would be wonderful, but at Westminster, the goal of every breeder is to win the breed. Everything else is icing.”

Judy Vandervort is Lukas’ owner. She lives in the state of Washington.

No luck for Jennifer.

The Clumber Spaniel from the Hamlet of Wallkill missed on her bid to win the breed. She won an award of merit last year.

“She did fine,” said owner Patricia Colman. “We might come back with Noah next year.

Tuesday 12:30 p.m.: 2 more unfortunate endings

A few new additions to our coverage were unsuccessful in attempts to win their breeds today.

Ch. Red Ruffian Regent of Berry, of Eldred, lost his bid to win the Irish Setter breed. And not long after that, a Flat-coated Retriever named Ch. Meadowrue Night to Remember, of Milford, Pa., struck out, too.

Much more coming.

Tuesday 11:43 a.m.: All in the family, Malamute takes 3rd

Crush, our Alaskan malamute, retired from showing, but his grandson, Falcon, did the family well.

Falcon – with handler Junior Das – took home an award of merit today, equal to a third-place finish, in the Alaskan Malamute breed.

“We didn’t expect it. We’re thrilled,” said Falcon’s owner, Kathy Hausner of Goshen.

Tony McRee, who owns Crush, was very happy, too.

“He’s a real good dog. He did Crush proud.”

Tuesday 10:15 a.m.: 4 dogs, 4 losses

We have a long, insane Tuesday at the dog show this year, mainly because we’ve unearthed another handful of local dogs that didn’t receive prior coverage.

Among them are Highgate’s Caled From the Ark of Stanfordville, a Border Terrier who lost in his breed. Owner Sheila Sanders was upset but optimistic.

“We’re a little disappointed, but we’ll be back next year, probably with his son.”

Also competing were Ala-Kasam’s Spirit of the Snow of Saugerties and White Magic’s Spirit of the Light of Fishkill, both Samoyeds. Nether placed.

Our German Short-Haired Pointer, Comet, also lost in his breed.

A disappointing morning so far, but there’s plenty dogs to go.

Tough one for our boy.

Monday 3:10 p.m.: Major: King of the Mini-Pins

Major, the Callicoon Miniature Pinscher, won Best of Breed today.

Quote of the day from his owner, Howard Schwell: “He just went in there and said, ‘Excuse me, this is my ring. He stuck it to that judge every time.”

Major has won Best of Breed in consecutive years, matching his father’s feat, accomplished in 2007 and ‘08. That makes the father-son duo of Sarge and Major one of the most decorated pairs in Mini-Pin history.

Best of Group, Toy, is later tonight.

Monday 2:38 p.m.: Deacon wins award of merit; Go Major!

Deacon, a Collie (smooth) from Goshen, won an award of merit today. That’s another third-place finish for the region.

Still waiting on a Best of Breed!

Natasha Holowaty, owner and handler, said she was happy with Deacon’s showing.

“He did etremely well. He’s a good boy.”

About to show is Major, our Miniature Pinscher. Owner Howard Schwell said he liked his chances, mentioning Major won the Empire Mini-Pin Specialty award yesterday. Major was the top-ranked Mini-Pin in 2009 and won Best of Breed last year, as well.

Monday 12:36 p.m.: Schipperkes show

Our two local Schipperkes showed, and one took home an award.

Surfer, who won Best of Breed last year, won an award of merit this year at Westminster. Handler Krista J. Nuovo is thinking, however, of bringing in a new dog next year.

“He showed really well, but I might bring out a new dog next year. Surfer has won every year he’s been here, so we’ll see.”

Surfer’s buddy, Justin, didn’t finish in the top three.

We’re waiting on our collie, Deacon, and our mini-pin, Major, but they’re being pushed back. It looks like the collies won’t show until well after 2 p.m., despite a planned 1 p.m. showtime. Major is scheduled to show at 2:15.

Lunchtime.
