Lowest voter turnout in past four supervisor races

Almost nine percent fewer Montgomery voters showed up at the polls yesterday to vote in town and county elections than in 2007.

The showing is the worst since 2003 (the oldest election year available on the county website) and more than 25 percent lower than the highest turnout in 2005.

Among those who did pull the lever, Supervisor Mike Hayes won decidedly, garnering 728 more votes than Susan Cockburn for a 58 to 41 percent margin.

His running mates for town board, Cindy Voss and Sheryl Melick, each also won by several hundred votes.

An anti-Cockburn mailer sent recently, which intended to turn out Hayes votes,  warned that Cockburn would get out the Democrat vote this election.

We’ll see the breakdowns soon enough, but it looks like neither side turned out big numbers this season.

Total Town Votes

2009, Hayes v. Cockburn: 4,424

2007, Cockburn v. Hayes: 4,836

2005, Cockburn v. Valk: 5,906

2003, Valk v. Cockburn: 4,959
