Handouts from Tuesday’s meeting gave a scenario of what the classroom sizes would look like at other district elementary schools, if Maybrook was closed.
Many people are wondering what school Maybrook kids would attend. At a meeting two weeks ago, Superintendent Richard Hooley talked about Berea and Montgomery elementary schools, saying both have a capacity of 600.
Here’s a look at how many kids were at each school as of Jan. 6:
Maybrook: 228
Berea: 420
Montgomery: 588
It’s worth noting that the school populations have all been shrinking over the last four years and the fifth grade at Montgomery, which would move up, is larger than the other classes.
A sample third-grade class at “School B,” according to the handouts, would have about 27 students compared with 20 today. That’s taking 36 Maybrook kids and putting them in one of five third grade classes at wnother school.
The district traditionally has aimed to keep classes under 25, which it has done with all but a couple of classes up to this year, school board president Bob Santo said.
