Newburgh B&B celebrates Fourth of July weekend rarity: guests

Fourth of July weekend has brought the City of Newburgh’s Goldsmith Denniston House something no prior Independence Day ever did: guests.

All four rooms at the bed and breakfast are booked this weekend, said city library Director Chuck Thomas, who runs Goldsmith Denniston with his wife. Two rooms have been taken by a Connecticut group who members were told the Hudson Valley has great fireworks shows, Thomas said.

“We use to have our own party on the Fourth of July because that was one weekend when we really never had guests,” Thomas said.

Fourth of July weekend tends is a local holiday. Backyard barbecues and local fireworks shows are holiday staples.

Is the presence of guests merely a sign of Goldsmith Denniston’s fortunes, which also had guests in January and February for the first time? Is it broader evidence of a city on the rise?

“I think it’s a statement on the city; I think it’s a statement on the economy; I think people are feeling better about the economy,” Thomas said. “They’re recognized that we’re a tourist draw; we have things to see here.”
