Noon has past and four Section 9 wrestlers have earned state tournament wild-cards.
Cornwall senior 125-pounder Drew Bloss
Valley Central senior 140-pounder Mike D’Amato
Middletown senior 215-pounder Jared Rosado
Port Jervis junior 285-pounder J.D. Zitone
D’Amato earned the most points of any Division I wild-card with 215 points.
Wallkill senior Steve Burger is a second alternate at 135.

Wildcards
Although not official until Thursday at noon, Varsity 845 has learned
Cornwall senior 125-pound Drew Bloss, Valley Central senior 140-pound
Mike D’Amato, Middletown senior 215-pounder Jared Rosado and Port
Jervis junior 285-pounder J.D. Zitone are expected to receive Division
I wild-card berths into the state tournament on March 8 and 9 at Blue
Cross Arena in Rochester.

Doolittle-Burger section final
The Section 9 Division I 135-pound final between Middletown’s Matt
Doolittle and Wallkill’s Steve Burger was one of the most exciting
matches Saturday.
Doolittle, a senior, won his first section title 9-8. Burger got a
two-point reversal late but couldn’t put Doolittle to his back.

Double-entry for Section tournament
This is probably a subject I should have touched on before the Section 9 Division I tournament.
I glanced over the Section 11 (Suffolk County) Division I championship results and saw two Huntington kids wrestled for third place at 103 pounds. Some sections allow teams to enter two wrestlers per weight class in the postseason.

Smith wins Pat D’Aliso award
Valley Central sophomore Nic Smith was given the Pat D’Aliso Award before the finals as the Section 9’s most improved wrestler.
Smith is 33-12 in his first varsity season.
