State afterthoughts/new poll

For the first time since 2002, Section 9 didn’t bring home a state title.

That doesn’t mean the section was lacking in outstanding performances.

Monroe-Woodbury senior Jamie Franco nearly defended his 125-pound title in the toughest Division I weight class.

Port Jervis senior 171-pounder Matt Parlier was a candidate for most outstanding wrestler as he willed his way to the final.

Steven Butler (215) and J.D. Zitone (285) joined their Port Jervis teammate in the finals, marking the first time at least three wrestlers from the same Section 9 school advanced to a state-title match since Valley Central sent four in 2005.

With the state tournament in the books, one question needs to be answered.

Who is the Varsity 845 wrestler of the year?

Check out the poll for the choices.
