The freshmen class (Updated)

Army hasn’t started a freshman this season. But five freshmen are on the defense 3-deep: Steve Erzinger (strongside linebacker, second team); Christopher Swain (DT, third team); Corey Laufasa (weakside linebacker, third team); Antuan Aaron (CB, third team) and Eric Jones (CB, third team).  Erzinger, Aaron and Jones played against Texas A&M. Jones forced a fumble on the opening second-half kickoff. Davyd [...]

The Obvious (UPDATED)

Anxiously awaiting Army’s game notes for the week and the team’s depth chart. Know this is the obvious, but Chip Bowden’s name better be No. 1 next to quarterback. Bowden’s play against Texas A&M should put him under center for the rest of the season. It’s not rocket science. Bowden runs the option the best and gives Army [...]

Road dog: At Tulane

Army is a 19½-point underdog against Tulane Saturday. Tulane (2-2, wins over Louisiana-Monroe and SMU) is averaging 21 points per game. The law of averages says if Army scores at least a field goal, it will cover. Expect Army to score more than that. Tulane’s defense has allowed 20 points per game. The game will be played at Tad Gormley [...]

My AP poll after week 5

I’m a voter for the Associated Press Top 25. I had a big shakeup this week after USC, Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin lost. Here’s my ballot after week 5. 1. Oklahoma (Actual poll ranking: 1) 2. Alabama (2) 3. LSU  (3) 4. Missouri (4) 5. Texas (5) 6. Penn State (6) 7. Texas Tech (7) 8. South Florida (10) 9. BYU (8) 10. Georgia (11) 11. [...]

A couple headscratchers

1. Going for the extra point after Pat Mealy’s 4-yard TD run brought Army to within 21-16 with 8:46 left in the game. You still need a touchdown by making the extra point. A successful 2-point conversion would have put Army a field goal away from tying the game. If it failed on the 2-point [...]

And then there were 3

Army, North Texas (0-4) and Washington (0-4) are the only winless Division I-A teams left. Army’s 10-game losing streak is the longest in Division I-A. Army deserved a win at Texas A&M. If the Black Knights give a similar effort against Tulane Saturday, they will break the streak. Army is 4-2 in its last six games against [...]

More postgame reaction: Texas A&M

Army fullback Collin Mooney  ”We ran the option well today. (on final play) It’s a game of inches and we needed that inch. We fought as hard as we could; we just came up short. We made the right reads all day. Being from Texas, this was a great experience for me.” Army linebacker Frank Scappaticci  “We figured they would come [...]

Post-game comments off the radio

Army sideline reporter Rich DeMarco caught up with coach Stan Brock and quarterback Chip Bowden after the game. Here’s a little of what they had to say: Coach Stan Brock “I’m very proud of the team and the way they came out and fought. They fought through adversity. I told them before the game I don’t care what [...]

Second-half game blog: Texas A&M

Wish I could be in the Army locker room at halftime to hear what coach Stan Brock tells his players. They played their best half of football of the season but trail 14-7. The option offense possessed the ball 19 minutes and 17 seconds in the first half and have only one score to show for [...]
