Mooney-Bowden moving up Army charts

Army fullback Collin Mooney (874 yards) and quarterback Chip Bowden (412 yards) have combined for 1,286 rushing yards this season. That’s the 21st highest total in a season by an Army rushing duo. Mooney and Bowden have Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside in their sights. Glenn Davis (Mr. Outside, 714 yards) and Felix “Doc” Blanchard (Mr. Inside, [...]

Air Force ties

Conversations must be interesting in Dixon family this week. Donnie Dixon is an Army sophomore safety. Dixon’s father and mother both served in the Air Force. Dixon is not alone. Many Army players have relatives or ties to the Air Force. Bet Dixon and fellow sophomore safety Donovan Travis have a lot to talk about. Travis’ father, Darin, [...]

High and tight

We’re not talking about a major-league brushback fastball. Army senior linebacker and co-captain John Plumstead came up with the idea for the entire football team to get their hair buzzed high and tight as a sign of team unity heading Air Force Saturday. Junior offensive tackle Ali Villanueva and junior cornerback Mario Hill showed off their buzzcuts as guests on [...]

Prediction time: Air Force

This Army-Air Force game must be a big one. ESPN blogger Graham Watson has selected the service-academy rivalry as one of the her 12 prediction games. Some facts to ponder before making your prediction: Air Force has won 17 of the last 19 meetings. Army’s 1988 Sun Bowl team will be honored at halftime. The 1988 team [...]

An Army victory over Air Force

Collin Mooney has his college choices narrowed to Army or Air Force. Air Force wanted Mooney to play linebacker. Army was recruiting Mooney as a fullback even though he never had a high school varsity carry. The service academies generally recruit the same hard-nosed, smart, unselfish players. Army was always Mooney’s first choice. Maybe it was because [...]

Scapp and Black Death

Frank Scappaticci said he was a little shocked when he received the Black Death award from Army coach Stan Brock after a 14-7 over Louisiana Tech. The Black Death award is given out to players for “exceptional and near-perfect” play. Scappaticci is the third Army player (Collin Mooney, Mike Wright) to receive the award from Brock. [...]

Coach Brock’s Tuesday presser: Air Force (Updated)

Here are a few comments from Army coach Stan Brock from his Tuesday press conference before the Air Force game Saturday. I will update this later. Opening statement  “We thought the defense played extremely well in a situation where they had the ball given to them based on turnovers five times inside the 50-yard line. To come away with [...]

Max Jenkins

To answer a question from another message board, Yes, freshman quarterback Max Jenkins was the lone running back in Army’s victory formation for the last three plays of the 14-7 win over Louisiana Tech Saturday. I’m sure that Max and his brother Ross Jenkins, the starting QB from Louisiana Tech, now join a long line of brothers, who have [...]

Bowl talk

Trying not to get to ahead of myself here, but let’s say, hypothetically, Army wins three of its last four games and gets to a bowl-eligible six victories. The six victories wouldn’t guarantee Army a bowl bid. Army has no bowl tie-in this season so it would likely have to wait until all the 6-6 teams from BCS conferences are [...]

Gann update

Army defensive tackle Mike Gann will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Gann started the first three games for Army before suffering the injury in practice. The junior isn’t with the team and has been sent home, in all likelihood to have surgery or rehab the injury. Junior Fritz Bentler has started the last five [...]
