Football-track connection

Army coach Rich Ellerson hopes to build a solid relationship with Army’s track and field team. Ellerson’s first step is having defending Patriot League 100-meter dash champion Alfred McDaniel come out for the football team. McDaniel is slated to play slot back. “We are going to have a significant amount of guys in our program that have track [...]

Jameson Carter update

It appears Army coach Rich Ellerson’s meeting with sophomore slot back Jameson Carter last week went well. Carter left spring football practice because of a family matter and was considering leaving the academy. “It looks like he’s back,” Ellerson said Wednesday. Carter was moved from wide receiver to slot back early in the spring and figures to [...]

Giants pick former Ellerson receiver

The New York Giants selected Cal Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden in the third round of the NFL draft Sunday morning. Barden, a 6-foot-6, 229-pound senior, caught 67 passes, 18 for touchdowns, for current Army coach Rich Ellerson at Cal Poly in 2008. He is one of three Division I-AA (Football Championship Subdivision) receiver to have [...]

Ellerson on Ali

The more and more, I think about the move of 6-foot-10 junior Ali Villanueva to wide receiver, the more I think it could turn out to be a work of genius. It basically puts a sixth offensive linemen on the field and gives Army a red-zone weapon no other team has. Here’s what Army coach Rich Ellerson [...]

Mooney and the draft

Army senior fullback Collin Mooney likely will not be selected in the NFL draft this weekend. No surprise. Fullbacks are generally one of the least drafted positions. But there’s a chance Mooney could be signed to a free-agent contract despite Army’s policy, which states cadets must serve at least two years after their graduation before asking for [...]

Slot backs (Updated)

As of this second, Army is a little thin at the slot back position heading into the fall. Sophomore Patrick Mealy and junior Ian Smith had good springs. Ellerson praised Smith in his spring wrap-up press conference. “With injuries and moving guys around, he just kept steadily improving and getting better. Especially in the end, Ian [...]

Bowling

It was announced Thursday the EagleBank Bowl will be played on Dec. 29 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Army will play in the bowl if it can win six games this season. That brings up a question I’ve been asked often, how will Army fare in 2009. For watching my share of practices, I can say [...]

Remembering Doc Blanchard

Here are a few memories of Doc Blanchard I gathered from my reporting Monday:  Pete Dawkins, 1958 Heisman Trophy winner “I went over to England for my Rhodes scholar work. Doc was commanding a unit of F-100 fighter planes in England. He arranged a flight that was unforgettable. We were in a two-seat F-100 fighter (with Blanchard [...]
