Army-Air Force connections

Zach Peterson was a guard for Northgate High in Newnan, Ga.

Andre Morris was the quarterback. For two years, Peterson opened up holes for Morris.

Now Peterson, Army’s junior center, will be looking to lay a jaw-dropping block on Morris, Air Force’s junior outside linebacker. The two friends will meet head-to-head for the first time in college when Army travels to Air Force on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him out there and hopefully getting a good piece of him,” Peterson said.

Peterson has started all eight games at center. Morris has 41 tackles, three forced fumbles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions in eight game.

The two messaged each other on Facebook Tuesday night.

“We still keep in touch on Facebook,” Peterson said. “We see each other on the holidays. We’ve been talking about the game a little bit, nothing serious, keeping it friendly.

Here are some other connections between the service academies:

* Army freshman cornerback Josh Jackson and Air Force sophomore running back go way back. The two, who hail from Lawrenceville, Ga., have played football against each other since the sixth grade. If Jackson went to a football camp, Clark was there. And the competition was on.

“Everything is a competition between each other,” Jackson said. “He’s a great friend. He’s like my brother.”

* Army coach Rich Ellerson married into the Air Force. Truman Spangrud, Ellerson’s father-in-law, retired from the Air Force as a three-star general. Ellerson’s best friend, Ray Wild, is an Air Force Academy graduate. Both will be in attendance for Saturday’s game.

* Army fullback Jared Hassin, who is sitting out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, started his college career at Air Force in the summer of 2008. Hassin left the academy after some practices. He is currently giving Army’s first-team defense a hard time each week as a scout-team running back. Hassin is Army’s fullback of the future.

* Army senior safety Chase Prasnicki’s father, brother and girlfriend attended the Air Force Academy.

* Army junior free safety Donovan Travis’ father, Darin, served in the Air Force and Travis was a military brat living in Arizona, California, Ohio, Florida and Texas.

* Army sophomore punter Kolin Walk’s uncle, Blake Brewer graduated from the Air Force Academy and is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force.
