Postgame: Air Force – Army players

Army quarterback Trent Steelman and safety Donovan Travis comment on Army’s 35-7 loss at Air Force Saturday.

Steelman

On what happened in the second half

“The defense made some good adjustments. We were still moving the ball. I thought we were still able to find something up the middle. We weren’t able to finish in the second half. You aren’t going to win many games putting up seven points. The team that we showed in the first half is the team we are capable of being. It’s not a matter of executing right now. It’s a matter of finding it down somewhere, being able to finish jobs and steal the game.”

“Our gameplan was to stick what we were doing. It was working. A lot of plays on the edge were getting us free. We didn’t make that many adjustments because what we were doing they couldn’t stop. We just kept running our game. It’s just a matter of finishing.”

On the lack of scoring production from the offense

“Right now, it’s the penalties and negative plays that are killing us. We get ourselves to 2nd-and-5 and we either have a penalty or we will lose yards on a play that puts us back to 3rd-and-8 or 3rd-and-9. Running this offense, you just can’t do that to yourself.”

On the loss

“It’s definitely a heartbreaker, considering the circumstances of the game. We worked so hard to do it for our seniors. We just let ourselves down today. We just have to find it in our hearts to keep playing. One of our season goals is still alive. We have to come back and get a win. It seems like we are being repetitive. I know it’s there. I know our offense is there. I know our skill is there. We just have to find it somewhere in us.”

Travis

“We just got beat. Air Force was just a better team today. We came out in the first half pretty good but somehow we got caught in everything (in the second half). They just beat us.”

“It was the mental attitude going into the second half. We come and play with a lot of energy for a few plays and then we got complacent.”

On how to put this game in the past

“Play the next game. We have another week to redeem ourselves.”
