Notebook: Ellerson’s tour, dinner with Ali

Army coach Rich Ellerson recently returned from the USO/Morale Entertainment Coaches Tour in Germany, Iraq and Kuwait.

Ellerson squeezed in a dinner with Ali Villanueva, Army’s leading receiver in 2009, and his family in Spain.

“That was a treat,” Ellerson said.

Ellerson bumped into a few former Army football players, who are serving overseas, including former offensive lineman Steve Westbrook, a 2008 West Point graduate. Westbrook is a platoon leaderĀ  in Iraq, where he has been stationed for seven months.

“It was easily one of the highlights of my deployment being able to spend time with coach,” Westbrook said in a e-mail. “I am looking forward to this season and watching our guys make a bowl game and beat Navy and Air Force.”

Ellerson said linebacker Stephen Anderson, defensive end Josh McNary and quarterback Chip Bowden, all seniors recovering from injuries, should be back for preseason camp in August.

“Everybody seems to be doing real well,” Ellerson said. “Everybody is on or ahead of schedule. Everything looks good.

When asked if he’s concered about depth at slotback after the departures of freshmen Greg Cotton and Lonnie Liggins, Ellerson said, “We’re fine. The depth hasn’t changed there. It’s all good.”
