Elllerson on Luetjen

There was some talk about incoming freshman Matt Luetjen playing defensive back early in his Army career. But Army coach Rich Ellerson said Luetjen, who threw for 1,260 yards and ran for 1,366 yards as a senior at Hennessey (Okla.) High, will take reps at quarterback to start the preseason. Doesn’t look like there’s rush to groom Luetjen to be Trent Steelman’s backup just yet.

“He’s a tremendous athlete,” Ellerson said of the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Luetjen. “He’s a coach’s son. He’s got a great football mind and a great mind, period. He’s very, very athletic. We are going to ask him to do some things within the offense that are going to be different than what he’s been asked to do in the past. For he and (fellow freshman) J.R. Woodward it will be how they pick it up, how natural are they operating but that will take some time. We don’t need make that call on day one or two or week one or two. We can give them some time there and see what their apitude is to picking this stuff up.”
