Aug. 24 practice blog

One of the Army’s season goals as a defense is the lead the nation in turnover margin.

Army’s cornerbacks are buying in. Sophomore Josh Jackson just missed getting his hands on a 35-yard pass from Trent Steelman to Austin Barr. Jackson ran to the sidelines, dropped and did 10 push-ups with the cornerbacks. James Whittington had an interception go in and out of his hands on the next play. More push-ups.

Cornerbacks coach Tony Coaxum said that the push-ups are a reminder to players in his unit to make plays when the opportunity presents itself.

“If they have a chance to make a pic and they don’t make it, that’s something that we need do,” Coaxum said. “We made a goal as a team and we know our deal. We are holding each other accountable. You got to make a play. If you don’t, you are giving the offense another chance.”

Speaking of Steelman, the sophomore quarterback practiced fully for the first time in a week. Steelman looked good, connecting on a 45-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver George Jordan. And no Army quarterback runs the option better than Steelman. He looks at least two steps faster to a hole than the other Army quarterbacks.

Junior Max Jenkins, who looks like he’s won the backup job over senior Chip Bowden, hit freshman Anthony Stephens on a 35-yard pass.

Sophomore Brian Cobbs also returned to practice fully and had an extra burst in his step.

Junior linebacker Andrew Rodriguez continues to be held out with a back injury.

Sophomore right tackle Derek Bisgard worked in with the second-team offensive line. Freshman center Shelby Jackson was running with the third team.

Freshman Justin Trimble is now playing rover and working with the varsity.
