Practice blog: Sept. 7

The ball hit the turf on a pitch and Army offensive coordinator Ian Shields blew his whistle.

Every Army offensive player dropped for 10 up and downs.

Army might have had its most productive scoring output in more than a year against Eastern Michigan. But it fumbled three times, losing one. Two of the fumbles were on pitches where the slotback and quarterback Trent Steelman got too close to each other.

“If the C-back (slotback) gets downhill ahead of the quarterback, that pitch ends up being really short,” Ellerson said. “If  I’m firing that ball to you and you are two and half yards away, the margin for error goes way down.”

Junior linebacker Steve Erzinger, who took a blow to the head in the second half against Eastern Michigan, practiced Tuesday and should play Saturday. Senior linebacker Sean Westphal, Erzinger’s backup, who left the game late in the fourth quarter, practiced without limitations.

Senior free safety Donovan Travis was limited in practice.
