Notebook: A new WHIP linebacker, A-Rod update

Sophomore Zach Watts studied a sheet of paper with plays as he got off the bus and headed to Army’s locker room.

Watts, who has seen some action on special teams, will get a good look at whip linebacker in practice this week.

Army coach Rich Ellerson said moving sophomore bandit Jarrett Mackey to whip (outside) linebacker against Temple last week created two problems.

So expect Mackey to be back at bandit, a combination defensive lineman/linebacker, at Tulane this week. I would imagine either junior Chad Littlejohn or Watts would start at the whip.

Army middle linebacker Stephen Anderson is probably the team’s best remaining whip linebacker but the team isn’t deep enough at his position to move Army’s captain.

Ellerson said junior whip linebacker Andrew Rodriguez is officially done for the season. Rodriguez, Army’s leading tackler, had back surgery on Sept. 13.
