Prediction time: Armed Forces Bowl

My first instinct when Army-SMU was announced as the Armed Forces Bowl was SMU should be a good two touchdowns better than Army.

I figured Army would have trouble defending SMU’s run-and-shoot offense and would get burned by the deep pass like it has most of the season.

A few weeks later, I’ve changed my opinion. I believe this could be a competitive game. I’m not sure Army can match SMU touchdown for touchdown. But I think Army coach Rich Ellerson knows June Jones’ offense well enough for the defense to hold its own.

SMU is a 7-point favorite at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, its home field.

Sal Interdonato (Times Herald-Record Army football beat writer): SMU 28, Army 24. Think this will be a game into the fourth quarter. If Army can put the heat on SMU quarterback Kyle Padron, it might be able to pull off this game.
Kevin Gleason (Times Herald-Record columnist): SMU 28, Army 20.

Predictions from around the college football universe
Andrea Adelson (ESPN.com college football blogger): SMU 30, Army 20. Adelson says on ESPN.com, “The Mustangs have more talent and are more explosive on offense with the run ‘n’ shoot and that makes the difference in the game.”
Scouts Inc.: SMU 35, Army 20
CBSSports.com:
All five experts picked SMU to win.
ESPN.com America’s Vote: Army 55 percent
