Pre-game blog: Armed Forces Bowl

This game may be at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, SMU’s home field. But I saw a ton of Army black and gold walking around the stadium.

I get the feeling that this is going to be more Army fans than SMU fans. It may be similar to my road trip out to Kent State, where Army fans were very vocal.

Senior Jordan Trimble will likely get the start at strong safety for senior Donnie Dixon. Dixon was injured in the Navy game on Dec. 11 and isn’t completely at 100 percent. I expect Dixon to play. Trimble has made seven starts (2 this season) in his career and is of a cover guy. Army has effectively used Dixon as a blitzer this season.

Bumped into former Army punter Owen Tolson, a 2008 graduate. This is the fifth straight Armed Forces Bowl that’s he attended. Tolson is stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas.

“It’s Dec. 30 and Army football is still playing,” Tolson said. “We never got to do that. I think it’s great that they got to a bowl game.”

Other football alumni who are in attendance are linebackers Charlie Rockwood and Cason Shrode, safety Dhyan Tarver and defensive tackle C.W. Estes.

Freshmen dress list: safety Lyle Beloney (from Katy, Texas); slotback Julian Crockett; slotback Jon Crucitti, cornerback Thomas Hollloway; center Shelby Jackson; defensive end Quentin Kantaris; linebacker Clayton Keller; defensive end Robert Kough; quarterback Matt Luetjen; slotback Raymond Maples; defensive lineman Mitch McKearn (James I. O’Neill graduate); linebacker Reggie Nesbit; wide receiver Anthony Stephens; rover Justin Trimble; offensive lineman Brian Zalneraitis.

Sophomore tackle Ben Jebb, a Cornwall graduate is dressing for the first time.
