March 2 practice blog

Army’s down to two quarterbacks – juniors Max Jenkins and Jimmy Reitter. Freshman Chase Cresto had his right foot in a boot and was on crutches during practice. Sophomore starter Trent Steelman is being held out of spring practice as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Freshman Daniel Whitaker may have received the biggest reaction of the day when the tackle hauled in a rollout pass from Reitter.

Freshman slotback Jon Crucitti sprinted across the field. Crucitti had an Army baseball cap on and a bat in his hand. HeĀ  watched a few minutes of practice before sprinting off. Crucitti’s made three starts in right field for the academy’s baseball team.

Sophomore tackle Ben Jebb, a 2009 Cornwall graduate, dropped first-team outside linebacker Zach Watts on a blocking drill. Watts was relegated to a red (limited) pinny after the drill for the rest of practice.

Freshman defensive end Mitch McKearn, a 2010 James I. O’Neill graduate, got a high-five from his position coach John Mumford for his pursuit on a sweep play. McKearn was working with Jarrett Mackey and Colby Miller on a pass-rush drill. “Run a 40-yard dash right through them,” Mumford said to McKearn.

Freshman linebacker Justin Trimble scooped up a fumble by sophomore fullback David Collins. Freshman defensive tackle Shane Finnane was in the middle of the fumble. “That’s a great job,” Army co-defensive coordinator Payam Saadat said to Finnan.

Freshman running back James Holland, getting some reps at the “A” back, busted out a 20-yard run.

Freshman Scott Williams was practicing returning punts and played slotback.
