Top defensive end transfers, Swain gone, roster update

Army will be missing a valuable member of its defensive line when it breaks camp on Aug. 1.

Defensive end Quentin Kantaris left West Point and plans on attending Moorpark College, a junior college in his hometown of Moorpark, Calif.

Kantaris, who is 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, played in nine games in 2010, third among freshmen behind linebacker Justin Trimble and running back Raymond Maples. He made one start at Kent State. Kantaris was a speed rusher, who made his presence known when he got his chance. He was listed as a second-team defensive end behind junior Jarrett Mackey at the end of spring practice.

Army will be without another experienced defensive linemen this fall. Senior Chris Swain, who has played in 21 career games, has left the team. Swain played in 11 games as a reserve defensive tackle last season and started two games as a sophomore in 2009. He made two tackles in Army’s 16-14 Armed Forces Bowl win in December. Army’s interior line could be young this season and Swain, who didn’t fully participate in spring practice due to an injury, was its most experienced player.

Looks like freshman fullback Larry Dixon will have an easier time moving up the depth chart. Senior fullback CeDarius Williams isn’t listed on Army’s roster. Williams started the first two games of the 2009 season but was limited to four games last season.

Ten sophomores aren’t listed on the roster: kicker Billy Fisher, offensive linemen Shane Jones, Colin Joy and Justin Godes, cornerback Tyki Nelworth, defensive linemen Mike Sikorski and Quetzalcoatl Carrasco and linebackers Colby Miller, Ryan McCollum and Casey Brewer.

None of the sophomores were listed high on Army’s depth chart. Miller was impressive at times at training camp last season.
